Thanks for resurfacing this Dimitri. A “blast from the past” with beautiful knives, plus a review of posts from some members who’ve not been seen in a while. Really enjoyed reviewing it again.

I seem somehow drawn to the unusual, and to long discontinued Case patterns including many that haven’t been posted in this thread. Although I’ve posted them elsewhere they probably belong here also.

Here’s a couple of 87 pattern gunstock whittlers. The pearl with the tipped file blade is a W.R. CASE & SONS, the stag is a TESTED XX. From my research the pattern last appeared in the 1936 price list.

Next is a TESTED XX push-button blade PBB1050F coke bottle “slider”. I have seen this also described as pattern PB91050 which makes sense, as some references say imitation onyx handle covers would be a “9”, but I have an old Case catalog reprint showing it as the PBB1050 pattern number, so that’s what I’m going with. Also other references (like Parker’s Pocketknife Trader’s Price Guide show the letter “B” prefix to denote imitation onyx. This was also produced with a plain blade (no fish scaler), which seems to be more commonly seen.

Next the rarely seen, early original version of the 6265LP. It was a small two-blade pen before the pattern number was re-assigned as the more commonly known folding hunter. (For documentation see Sargent’s 7th edition page 235). Note it is stamped with a pattern number and “XX”, both indications of being from the early TESTED XX era.

Here’s a W.R. CASE & SONS 6227. Rogers bone, shadow bolsters. Not sure if collectors would call this a “double-reverse gunstock”, or a “canoe”.

Thanks a lot bud, don't really know the provenance though. OKCA find, used, no box/papers. I thought it was factory but I wouldn't really know either way. Is there a way to tell?

Beautiful stag. I believe it’s factory. You can often tell factory stag by the slight depressions in the bolsters adjacent to the grooves in the stag. This happens at the factory during the hafting operation. Due to the nickel silver bolsters being softer than stag, the hafting wheel removes some of the bolsters. Case calls this “sucking out” (as in the bolster material is “sucked out” during hafting). Unfortunately with the advent of “thick stag” so much material is removed that you don’t often see the phenomena on newer (post mid-1960s) stag.

When you see it, that indicates the stag was from the factory. If not there, the knife may have been re-handled. Somewhere here is a copy of an article from an old Case Collector’s Club newsletter that explains it better. I’ll post a link to it if I can find it.
