Address Discrepancies

Post by just bob »

I've ran into this a couple of time recently and it is bound to be an issue sooner or later. A buyer asks you to send an item to a specific address. That's all well and good but when you go into Pay Pal and try and print the label you find out the buyer has a different address on file with them. As a seller you cannot change the information on file, only the buyer can. You contact the buyer and explain the problem to them and either they don't respond or say do what you think is best. The Ebay policy is to ship the item to the address on file with Pay Pal ONLY and under no circumstances should you send it to a different address or else you void buyer protection. Also, Ebay considers, an item delivered once it arrives at the address on file with Pay Pal. If the item is lost or stolen after it has arrived, then it is the responsibility of the buyer to take appropriate action. The seller is not held liable or accountable and has completed their obligation by addressing it to the address on file with Pay Pal or Ebay. For example, in some apartment complexes mail is delivered in bulk to a postal room and sorted by employees of the complex. If it is put into the wrong box or if it mysteriously disappears the item is still considered to have been delivered. I have had this very thing happen to me on eBay twice and both times eBay ruled in my favor because the tracking information showed the item was delivered to the address on file. They say it is the responsibility of the buyer to provide accurate information to eBay and Pay Pal and also forwarding information to the USPS if a change in address has occurred. If it is stolen after it arrives at the address on file, then the buyer should file a police report or conduct an investigation.
Maybe AAPK has policies addressing these types of issues? Have others had issues? If paying with cash, check, or money order I'm not sure what the policy would be?

Great question. The 2 AAPK policies I found are here https://www.allaboutpocketknives.com/ca ... quirements and here https://www.allaboutpocketknives.com/ca ... g-policies but there isn't specific guidance about how to proceed where a buyer asks you to send an item to an address that's different than the verified PayPal address. As a store owner, if I was confronted with that situation and I didn't know the buyer and they paid via PayPal, I would ONLY ship to the address on file with PayPal. I may make an exception if I knew the buyer.

As you've already pointed out, your obligation as a seller is to get a confirmed delivery to the address on the order to obtain the highest degree of protection should the package go missing. ::handshake::

I think sending the eBay item only to the address on file with PayPal is a way to
protect the person buying the item from thievery. People hack accounts
and then send items to themselves or friends.

Could the person buying the item temporarily change their address on
PayPal until they know item was shipped?
