Case Certificate of Authenticity

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

Case Certificate of Authenticity

Post by RodneyJ_SC »

Hello all.....I am new to the forum and also knife collecting. I have been collecting knives for about 6 months now. My favorite to collect is the limited edition sets from Case. My question is this: Most of the knives I have bought have the Certificate of Authenticity, but a few do not. How bad does this hurt the value? Does it hurt at all? If these knives are serialized can you get replacement certificates if the knives are proven authentic? Once I get a decent display case I will take some pics and post then on the other thread for newly acquired knives.

Thanks for your input......RodneyJ

Well some think it hurts the value alot and some not so much. Personally I could care less because I am buying the knife not the box or a piece of paper that comes with it. But thats just me. Happy collecting.

Thanks for the input.....I probably shouldn't be overly concerned about the certificate. I am one who likes to collect my toys and not sell any. I still have my first car that I bought in 19881. I drove my last truck for 28 years before selling it. More than likely my grandson will get my collection when that time comes.

I wouldn’t worry over it. The ‘Certificate of Authenticity” is a sales gimmick from the mind of James Parker, the “P.T. Barnum” of knives. They’re really worthless but some people don’t know that.

Here’s an older thread about the subject. viewtopic.php?t=62100 You can read the posts in it and decide for yourself. If you decide you want a COA, all you need is a printer.

Thanks for the information and link Ken. I searched for this topic before posting, but didn't find one....never thought of searching about a sucker being born. Like I said, I am not overly concerned about the COA; I buy knives that catch my eye and I like. I have purchased 8 knives since Dec. 26th. I may have to put myself on restriction if I don't slow know.

Glad to help, Rodney. A simple keyword search here on AAPK for “COA” will find a lot about them. “Search” is found under Quicklinks on the upper left of this page. On some mobile devices it's the little 3 line "hamburger" icon. Ckick on it, then scroll down to Search, open it, and follow the prompts. ::tu::

Like Ken says, it really is a Case Knife gimmick. It may make some people
a little more excited ( hence asking price may be a little more) but to
a lot of us here not a deal breaker.

Keep on posting!

Agreed, that a printer is all that's necessary to come up with any COA you want. To write "PROTOTYPE" on the master blade, all you need is a marker. How much value either one adds is up to the buyer.

If I buy a knife and it came boxed, I keep the box. If I bought a knife without a box, I do not look for a box to purchase. But old knife boxes are highly collected but some. Same deal with whatever paperwork came in the box.
