Picked up what I think is a WWII era Case XX Bowie. The only mark is the Case XX. I know Case used this mark 40s through to the 60s. How can I determine if it is WWII era?
I'm usually a pocketknife collector so not even sure if I'll keep it but I would like to know if it has some history.

In your identical thread in the military related knives sub-forum Mumbleypeg linked a thread in which zzyzzogeton wrote that knives like yours made by Case during WWII had baklite handles. You wrote your knife's stamp was used 1940s into the 1960s. Baklite was not used that long so the first question I'd look to answer is are your handles bakelite. My 1970s black Case Sodbuster comes to mond as having more modern plastic I'd compare it to but I can't do that over the internet. Do you know if your knife's handles are bakelite?
Poking around for information on these knives I noticed SMKW has new ones with white plastic handles. White looks wrong on these knives.

Thanks, yes I reposted it here as there didn't seem to be much interest about it in the Military subforum. Maybe there are more Case collectors here than MilSurp collectors so may as well try it here.
In the wrong? Let me know and I'll gladly remove it.
Yes, it appears the handle scales are bakelite. Blade appears to be carbon steel and seems to have been cleaned with steel wool.
The tang stamp information is from the Official Price Guide to Collector Knives, 15th Edition (2008). You've probably seen it.
Curiously, I can't find mention of this knife or any Case fixed blade knife with a blade over 6" or so in this guide. Maybe I'm not looking in the right place. There are a number of knives from the 30s and 40s that simply list the handle material as "composition" though.
This knife appears to be pretty hard to reference as Case never gave it a designation or model #. Even Military Knives, a Reference Manual from Knife World Magazine (2001) doesn't mention a name or model #, but it does mention the incorrect use of the V44 name.
Here's a nice link showing the knife as it was used in the USAAF Jungle Bailout Emergency Survival Parachute Kit.

I'm pretty sure it's WWII era, but since it has no military stamping, no USA or USAAF, I'm just hoping for advice on confirming it's history.

You can determine it is WWII because it was made for WWII bail out kits. The Curly XX stamp on this knife was used on very few patterns but that doesn't necessarily date the knife.
If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.

Yes, your knife is WW2 production. It has the "curly" Xs which are an earlier version of the CASE XX mark. The ricasso stamp chart shown has mistakes and is not reliable by any means. Although it was made during the war that doesn't necessarily mean it was issued during the war, there were likely lots left over and sold as surplus after the war. Cool knife!!

Thanks for the replies and information. Does anyone know the production dates for this pattern with this stamp? Did Case continue to make this pattern after the war and into the 1960s or did they discontinue it, only to revive it at a later date?
