Red Bone wear/color on a Case Questions

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

Red Bone wear/color on a Case Questions

Post by Bloodhound »

I have a small Case Stockman with Redbone scales. It is on the light red side of things lighter than a stopsign. I was hoping it would be a darker red. It is in like new condition. So my question is, if I put it in my regular rotation, will the bone darken with use or lighten up more or???

If it won't darken, I may trade it while it is in as new condition and see if I can find a darker red bone.

Bone is a natural, organic material. Therefore it is inconsistent in its absorption of dyes, resulting in variation from piece to piece, or across a given piece. It is also not possible to predict how it will age. My inclination is that its color may become lighter over time, but that will depend on what it is exposed to as it is carried and used.

If you don’t like the color, trade it.

Yet another reason to buy in person, rather than online.

I think Ken is correct. I am not sure how much darker you want to make it
but placing it in EDC will darken the bone from my experience.
Clean the the bone well with Dawn dish soap and place it
in your EDC for a few weeks. The oils from your hands may make it dark
enough for you. ( Depending where you live, this time of year your
hands could to very dry, so more time is required )

I have placed a light coat of mineral oil on some of my bone handled knives and
have seen them darken to a small degree. Don't soak them in mineral oil
however- it may soften the bone.

Best of luck and let us know if something worked out.

Bob

p.s. Use mineral oil that is unscented and clear. Look for USP mineral oil
at your local pharmacy or

Thank you both for the info and thoughts...This is exactly what I was hoping for. I think I will take it to the Gun and Knife show in March and if it sells great if not into the daily carry rotation and It will be fine. Again thank you for your time and info
