Case knife/hachet combo

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

Case knife/hachet combo

Post by Aintright »

I was told that this item was from 1931? I was lyucky enough to aqquire it. If it is a 1931 it sure is in great shape. I would have thought from that time it would have been used more, it doesn't look like it's been hardly used. You thought on it will be appreciated

Beautiful Knif-Ax set! That’s a model 561 Deluxe, they were produced from 1935 until discontinued in 1970. Yours is a more recent one, the earliest sets were stamped simply CASE XX on the hatchets. Post-WWII the stamps on the axes changed to CASE’S TESTED XX. (Dates for stamps on fixed blades and hatchets are different than dates for pocket knives). From 1965 until they were discontinued in 1970 the axes were stamped CASE XX USA (which matches pocket knife stamps). So yours dates from about 1946 to 1964.

It’s somewhat unusual to find a set that is in mint condition but they exist (in fact I have one). However I think these were more a novelty and not real practical, so most sets didn’t get a lot of use beyond perhaps being sharpened. There are exceptions of course.

Here’s my sets.

Ken would you happen to know the value of the one that I have? I won't ever sell it like I won't any of my knives. I think I got it at a good price. Can You tell Me if there is a price guide from case out there?

I don’t know of any recently published price guides, and don’t put much stock in them anyway. Your best source for current value is an advanced search on eBay for sold listings only, of the item. Those knife-ax combo sets come up for sale frequently so you should be able to find some recent sales for comparables.

However sets in near mint condition are rare so you’ll probably have to compare condition of those that have been sold with yours, and adjust accordingly. Those having the original box (which you don’t have) are even more rare so they typically bring an extra premium. Search for Case stag knife hatchet combo set, or some variations of those keywords in your search.
