Case 6318HP but the CASE on the tang has no markings?

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

Case 6318HP but the CASE on the tang has no markings?

Post by underthe110 »

Hello all, going through my Dad's stuff I found what I think is the first knife he gave me when I was a kid- I'm thinking around 1969-70?. From what I can see the CASE logo on the tang should have XX's or dots or? but it doesn't. Is it a fake? Any help is appreciated!

Actually, it does have two "XX" under CASE which dates it from the "XX era" 1940-1964. Great old knife from your Dad. ::tu::

You can see the "XX" under CASE in this position.

What is"HP"? Levine says "H" is butter an molasses and "P" is Pakkawood .Price says "P" is punch and doesn't show an "H". Neither shows HP together. Does anyone know what "HP" means ? Thanks, J.O'.

This is the information for blade abbreviations used by Case found in the research section on this site.

Thanks, Kevin. None of my books had it and I should have searched the site. Duh! I guess those codes changed from time to time. ::handshake:: J.O'.

HP is correct for SHeepsfoot and SPey. Case uses the second letter of the word. Sheepfoot and Pen is HE. Supposed to eliminate the conundrum of using “S” as the abbreviation for both Sheepfoot and Spey.

Instead it just confuses collectors, but we weren’t the intended audience - Case factory personnel were. Yet another example of a situation which pre-dates collectors, but confuses us now. To understand some of these puzzles we have to put ourselves into the time when there was no knife collecting hobby. ::tu::

Why would ANYONE think this is a fake? I just don’t understand the thinking of many.

Sign of the times. When your best source of information is the sewers of Facebook, Twitter and the like, you only learn that many Case knives are fakes. Details don’t matter.

At least the OP came here and asked. ::nod:: ::tu::
