Real bone or Imitation

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

Real bone or Imitation

Post by hamiipb »

I new to getting into real knife collecting, I collected as a kid but just had cheap knives. My biggest question right now is how can I tell if its real bone or not. Mainly I want to know when I get a knife with the 6 handle material.

There are two things you can do to calm your fears:

1. Study. Learn. Do your homework before laying down your hard earned cash.
2. Buy from reputable dealers/sellers with a known history of good business practices and knowledge.

For knives that I'm going to keep, I generally buy from only two people, and both are paying members here. That's something to think about.

One last thing. There is a book out there called "Counterfeiting Antique Cutlery". This is an excellent book to read and study. Hundreds of close-up photos of fake and counterfeit knives. Not just about "Bone vs Delrin", but everything. It will show you some of the things to look for. There might even be a copy of that book for sale in one of the stores here.
