Case xx 6269 shield

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

Case xx 6269 shield

Post by Hesmikeb »

Picked this up at a local antique store today. I don't have many case xx examples and until this, no 6269 in my knife pile. The bone color and jigging look right, the blades look right to me. The few I have seem to have a more bold looking tang stamp but not sure about that. I did have concerns about the shield but I bought it anyway since it was $38. This shield almost looks fake. I don't see any sign of it being pinned, looks too thick, not flush with the bone but looks like it fits perfect within its spot. Is it possible it was never buffed at the factory or more likely, a replacement that was glued in?

Would like your thoughts/opinions if you get a chance

I'm no expert but it looks like a nice find and good price.

From your pictures, it looks like the shield is sitting quite "proud" and it almost looks like there is no inlay at all. Also, there is little or no wear on the shield to match the pocket wear on the scales. So, I would have to agree with your impression that this is a replacement shield, that was probably not pinned, and is not a great fit. On the other hand, I think $38 is a nice bargain for that knife. If the shield really bothers you, warm it up with a heat gun and see if you can just pry it off. If it is just glued on, it will come off easily with heat, and then you can find a worn shield to pin on properly. ::tu::

Thanks guys. I'm probably going to leave it as is although I do have a XX era 62109/baby copperhead with broken blades that has a good shield that might fit. But it has good scales and everything so dont want to mess with it either.

Not sure you can see in the pics I posted of the 69 earlier, but that shield looks like it has a rim around the outer edge...reminds me of those shields they used in the late 80s but not quite as defined...are there reproductions out there?
