Schrade-IXL stag Canoe knife and box

Schrade Cutlery Company was founded in 1904 by George Schrade, and his brothers Jacob and William Schrade. In 1946 Imperial Knife Associated Companies, (IKAC; an association of Ulster Knife Co and Imperial Knife Co) purchased controlling interest in Schrade Cut Co and changed the name to Schrade Walden Cutlery. In 1973 the name was changed to Schrade Cutlery. In 2004 Schrade closed due to bankruptcy.

This forum is dedicated to the knives that are the legacy of this company. This forum is not the place to discuss the replica knives currently being imported using the Schrade name.

Schrade-IXL stag Canoe knife and box

Post by raincrowe »

I have Schrade-IXL canoe stag handle knife in the box .....master blade marked IXL- Schrade wostenholm...backside ..Sheffield England
one of the bolsters is marked M2652...the other looks like hallmarks SW?1....I can't tell what the the third symbol is...
I have owned this knife since the 1980's and really haven't seen another I'm sure there are others out there maybe different patterns
Very well crafted knife and I would like to know more about knife's history ..like when it was made... and how many were made ect..
any and all information welcome
Thanks in advance ::tu::viewtopic.php?f=35&t=72420

Very nice knife raincrowe! That is a real BEAUTY!
AND... the presentation box very nicely complements your knife.

I have one of the knives but it is not in as good a shape as yours.

Raincrowe, the Schrade Wostenholm era was short-lived and if memory serves I think goes like this. In 1977 Schrade bought the Sheffield company (Richards) that owned the Wostenholm I*XL brand and then sold the company (or pieces of it) in 1982. I understand the five-year Schrade Wostenholm effort was a bit of a train wreck, producing some good knives but others with quality issues. I believe some knives were made entirely in Sheffield while others were made there using skeletons sent over from the U.S.

The SW in the bolster stamp that looks like a hallmark stands for Schrade Wostenholm. The “0” indicates the year of manufacture, i.e., 1980. If you Google around a bit you can gather bits and pieces of the Schrade Wostenholm story but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a comprehensive “warts and all” writeup on the subject. I’ll be the first to admit some of the above may be off, and if so I hope someone more knowledgeable will correct me.

WOW.... Nice!
I have gotten 2OT knives in a lot worse shape than that! (And restored them for my collection)

Finding 2OTs in ANY shape these days is a real chore.
I know where there is one for sale right now (that has had work done to it) and the seller is asking $450 for it.

Keep that one in your sights!

Mike I have several Old Timer knifes some have different numbers like....Schrade USA 152...Schrade + USA 60T...Schrade USA 340T
Schrade USA 1940T......Schrade 120T... I have others just haven't dug them out yet...would you know what the different numbers represent?
Does these indicate patterns...year made..ect ::tu::

YES.....

Drag those Schrades out and show 'em off!

The numbers on the tang are model numbers but I am not exactly sure how Schrade came up with the numbers.

BUT.... there has to be some method to their madness.... For instance.....

The 8OT is the 4" "Senior Stockman" with a clip, sheepfoot and spey blade.
The 89OT is the 4" "Blazer" and has a clip, SERRATED sheepfoot and spey blade.
The 858 is the 4-5/8" "Lumberjack" and has the same blade complement as the 8OT.

8 OT Schrade NY USA Frontiersman.JPG
89 OT Blazer.JPG
858 OT Lumberjack.JPG

SO..... at least for knives of similar size and blade complement, the "8" series of folders are basically the same.

After that..... I don't have a clue.....LOL

I found in my collection another small.... Schrade IXL Wostenholm Sheffield knife
one bladed lock back... just slightly over 3 inches appears to be second cut stag handles
stamped in ink on the blade plus hallmarks
