New Case Trapper Black Sea Dichrolam
This was available at noon EST, Tuesday, December 22, 2020 from Smoky Mountain Knife Works, item #CA95110. The Case Pilot Test Run Dichrolam trapper was a limited run of a beautiful new handle material and sold out in one day.
Two hours after I ordered mine, they were all gone. No availability amount was given, however, most "Pilot Test Run" knives in the past at Smoky was normally 100 or less.
Dicrolam can be made in many colors. Case decided to use "Black Sea" for its deep blues, greens and violets interstreaked with gold to red veining. The dichroic color shifts from blue green at right angle viewing to deep purple and violet at skewed angles.
Ordinarily the enthusiasm in snagging a Pilot Test Run (or PTR as it’s sometimes called) is in the collector potential, as they’re almost always a hard-to-find limited edition after even a few years.
Some collectors do not care for the blade to be printed with the words: "Pilot Test Run" However, if the knife is produced in the future as a "Series Run" than you will need the Pilot Test Run knife to have a complete series.
If you’re not familiar, Case likes to create pilot test runs of knives with new handle materials and styles. The purpose is to gauge the market’s reaction to a new style before they make a full production run. This makes pilot test runs (which are usually marked) highly collectible, because they may or may not ever reach full production.
This knife has opalescent Dichrolam burl handles that are comprised of over nine separate polymer layers laminated in three separate proprietary lamination steps.
Tru-Sharp Surgical Steel Blades. Dichrolam Handles, also called "Diamondwood." Brass Pins and Liners. Nickel Silver Bolsters with XX Engraving on front bolster. Made in the USA.
Measurements: 3.125” Clip Point and Spey Blades. 1/16” Thick. 4.125” Closed.
The Case Dichrolam Handle Trapper Pilot Test Run features Tru-Sharp surgical steel 3.125" clip point and spey blades with Pilot Test Run Etch and nail nicks. The handles are Dichrolam, brass pins, liners, and nickel silver bolsters. It's 4.125" closed.

I seldom use my Flatbed scanner to capture knife photos, however, due to its colors I thought I'd give it a try.
The below two pictures are from my scanner.
Pretty impressive.

Great looking knife, Dan.
I picked up one too with one of those wooden Case Knife Kits to get the free Case magnetic stand. Since you posted yours I don't need to open mine.

Thanks for all your responses guys.
The fit and finish is excellent, excellent Case quality, however, it does not have Half Stops.

I fought temptation and lost. Just finished ordering an 07 Mini-Trapper from Shepard Hills. Don't know when I'll get it. They are all on back order. Maybe for Christmas?????MissouriGuerrilla wrote: ↑Sat Sep 03, 2022 5:54 am Man.....that is unbelievable!

Re: New Case Trapper Black Sea Dichrolam
Very nice Jerry! The Black Sea Dichrolam is an eye-catcher for sure.
I did a little bit of research and found that Dichrolam is made in a few different color combinations so I'm waiting to see what's next. I'd love to see a full sized canoe pattern (I snagged the Baby Butterbean) in Black Sea Dichrolam or one of the other colors.
