Y'all have any Schrade I*XL Wostenholm knives ????

Schrade Cutlery Company was founded in 1904 by George Schrade, and his brothers Jacob and William Schrade. In 1946 Imperial Knife Associated Companies, (IKAC; an association of Ulster Knife Co and Imperial Knife Co) purchased controlling interest in Schrade Cut Co and changed the name to Schrade Walden Cutlery. In 1973 the name was changed to Schrade Cutlery. In 2004 Schrade closed due to bankruptcy.

This forum is dedicated to the knives that are the legacy of this company. This forum is not the place to discuss the replica knives currently being imported using the Schrade name.

Y'all have any Schrade I*XL Wostenholm knives ????

Post by Meridian_Mike »

I just purchased this guy. It is not in the best shape (at least by looking at the seller pics).
I did a little research, and found out that Schrade owned Wostenholm for a while and put out a series of knives in about 1981 - 1983 or so.
.
SO.....
.
Let's see what y'all have in your collection!
.
Here is the poor soul I just rescued ... it shall get a good cleaning when it arrives.
I can't see a serial number but I understand there should be one on the bolster.

.
NOW.....
Let's see what y'all got.
I'll bet y'all have some nice examples.

All it needs is a good cleaning and slipped into a pocket, preferably mine.
Kidding aside that's a sweet little knife. ::tu::

My two Schrade I*XL, "Orgill Brothers & Co. Commemorative Pearl Canoe Scrimshaw" knives and two matching ivory plaques. Scrimshaw by Bill Feeney. These always bring a smile to my face but I tend to forget their long official name.

Finally my latest. Another pearl gunboat canoe with a I*XL etch. This one is still on it's way to me but I think it's journey has just begun.

I feel driven to send it to Bill Feeney as a "blast from the past" forty years after he did the Orgill Bros. knives. I'm thinking about what I want done to it. I know I want a Birth of Venus image on the front. I'm thinking of a Neptune image for the pile side but I'm not set on anything yet. I hope he will do it for me. He did a fantastic job on my bone SC509.

WOW..... WOW.... WOW.....
.
Those are some really beautiful knives!
.
AND.... those scrimshawed knives are drop dead killers!
.
Maybe I am just not paying attention, BUT, I hardly ever see any of these Schrade - Wostenholm knives show up for sale.
It might be a difficult task to put a set of these together.....
.
EXCELLENT SHOW GUYS!!
.
Y'all keep 'em comin'!

Thanks Mike!

I'm confident you could even find a 5-knife Master Set if you really want one. These IXL knives are out there. You just gotta hunt for them. Auctions vary a lot in price so do some finished auction research before you start spending. There are deals to be had.

I heard back from Bill Feeney today and he's going to take on my pearl canoe project. I'm super happy about that and have decided on what I want done.

I'm going to keep my 3rd canoe as close a match to the Orgill Bros. knives as possible. This means a scrim only on the front of the knife. I decided it's better to have the big slab of unmarked pearl on the back.

A cherub ended up in the ocean when I tried to fit him on the knife. There just isn't room to keep them flying above Venus, so she will be all by herself on the pearl.

In keeping with the Orgill knives, I'm also going to have Bill scrim a matching mammoth ivory plaque with the entire Cabanel "Birth of Venus" image (including all the cherubs). The plaque may have to be a bit bigger than the Orgill ones (to fit the whole image) but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Here are the mock-ups I made.

Venus doesn't need any cherubs; she reminds me of someone I once knew. It will be great!

Great knives being shown here and bladecollectorr you have some very rare ones, some i have never before seen.
These actually are not Schrade knives. All but the Texas Stockman were made by Camillus and then sent to Britain to have handles put on and then sent to Schrade to market and sell. The Texas Stockman was made by Wostenholm.

Thanks Roland!

I disagree with the Camillus-made comment, but I have certanly heard that before so I know you too have read that as a "fact". My understanding is that only the lockback knives were made by Camillus. I wove my way through this mystery 10 years ago. I will find the links...

Here is the link to the "bottom line" on who made these Schrade I*XL knives: https://www.bladeforums.com/threads/que ... t-10946152

I suggest reading the whole thread, beginning to end, to really grasp where the Camillus vs Wostenholm confusion came from.

"Made by Camillus" is a quote from Phil Gibbs posted about 10 years ago in BladeForums. As Phil was 'production manager' ? in Camillus for a great many years he is the person whose statements are accurate.

Do any of the Schrade-IXL knives match a Schrade pattern ? I think not but they do match Camillus patterns.

No, none match a Schrade pattern. The lockbacks are a match to Camillus patterns. The other Schrade I*XL knives match Wostenholm patterns.

Just stumbled across this thread which is timely as I finally acquired last month "Herald's of the Sea" set I been on the hunt for a while now. Figure better take some photos now before getting packed with the rest of the collection for the big move from NY to VA soon.
This set not only has the wood display box, but came in its original packaging box as well.

My first Schrade I*XL Wostenholm knife is this canoe I picked a little over four years ago...
12128

Then came the BS60 & BS20 from the Lehigh Valley Knife Show, Easton, Pa... oh how I miss those shows...
10618

This Limited Edition Stockman turned out to be more special than I knew when I first acquired it.
Purchased from late Richard Lanigan, it has a Serial № of "WG001" which turns out to be a presentation piece given to Walter Gardiner,
who just a few years later became president of the company.
