Case XX 5232 what year was it made?

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

Case XX 5232 what year was it made?

Post by pocketlama »

My wife had this in her junk box and I thought it might have a history. It looks like it was made between '65 and '69. Is there a way to narrow it down at all? And what about its value if we wanted to sell. I see prices from $400 down to $30 and I have no idea where in that range it might be.
Thanks!

Very cool old CASE! You’re right about the year range. With that stamp that’s as close to a date as you’re going to get. When you get to the 70’s you can narrow it down to the year, but not with the 65-69 stamp.

As to value I’ll let the experts chin in as that isn’t a pattern I’ve ever collected, but sure wouldn’t kick it out of the pile. Being stag handled will help it for sure, but it’s in well used condition with some blade loss on the clip blade which will detract from its value.

As it is, it’s a fine user to slip in your pocket and carry. I sure would.

Thanks! I wasn't trusting myself about the date. Thanks, I appreciate it.

Given its condition it looks like a good user but not a lot of collector value. Condition is everything. Assuming it still has good snap opening and closing I’d guess $40-60. The higher priced knives will be older ones than yours, in mint or near-mint condition. You could go to eBay and try doing an advanced search for sold listings of Case 1965-69 5232 and see what they sold for. Try to find some in similar condition to yours.

Looks kind of dry, too. If you haven't already...put some oil in the joints and on the blades.

Thanks, I put some CLP on it and it's opening a lot easier now. That's great stuff!

::tu:: ::tu:: ::tu:: Oh...and I'd say that's a 5252...not 32, as the thread is titled.

Doc, it’s a 32 which is a “Texas Jack”. There is no 52 but the 052 is a Congress pattern.

::facepalm:: Sorry..I don't understand Case knives. I was just assuming, since it looked like it said 5252 on the master blade, that's what it was. Now, looking closer...I'm seeing the 3. Time for an eye check, as well.
