6380 big whittler

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

6380 big whittler

Post by garyflorida »

I am noticing on the 6380 esp, when the large blade is opened, there seems to be an alignment problem. The blade does not open up even with spring at all. There seems to be a step at the connection. This is the second 6380 spilt spring whittler that shows this.
Is this a factory mess up or to be expected flaw please?

Gary

I've seen that before Gary. That one appears to be a little more "pronounced" but it's not uncommon. A few of my original Dot Era Case have that very same step. It bugs the heck out of me too. :x

Well it seems to be a design flaw I guess. I feel bad because I returned a perfect 6380 except for it had the step problem.
Now I am looking at my 6383 and it has the same condition.
No more split spring designs for me. ::paranoid::
Thanks Mike!
PS If anyone has any Case instruction wrapping tissue out there, I would love a few please!

Where the tang meets the back spring when in the open position is called "back square" or more commonly "run up" and it's not supposed to look like that. The "run up" on this China made A.G.Russell is about as close to perfect as any knife I've ever seen other than pure customs.

The "run up" on your knife is just plain 'don't give a s***' poor quality control.

I also hate that kind of run up! I have three knives made like that. The strange thing, to me, is that the worst offenders are not cheap China junk. All my cheap China junk has a pretty good run up. My three are a Boker, a Hen and Rooster which I suspect was made in the same German factory as the Boker, and an old Henry Sears.

I was not aware that any Case knifes had the same problem. For a couple of years I have been intending to get a Case 6380 but I keep shying away from the price. Now I have to wait until I have forgotten this thread ... maybe a couple of weeks?

Here is a link to an old thread where I was complaining about the same thing.

Mel, not that I own or handle a lot of Case knives but fortunately I have yet to run to this issue and hope I never do. That would be right up there at the top of my list of pet peeves along with weak or no snap.

So far I have 6 'minty' knives of different patterns. I would say 1 of these is built correct ..the rest have factory errors. Always thought these knives were perfect in form...not so. Pretty redbone, shiny bolsters and blades but poor fitting.
