Is this normal on stag handles?

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

I saw this knife on ebay and I was surprised at the big gobs of epoxy around all the pins. Is this normal??

Is that epoxy or just the interior of the stag exposed by counter sinking? Whichever, it is not the way most stag and most Case looks. I would just about bet that Case has been rehandled.

Looks to me like factory handles - the pins were countersunk during spinning. No glue. Some countersink is common and you'll sometimes see it on bone too. I've seen a few similar but that one is about the worst. Here's a couple of mine for comparison. Enlarge pics to see the pins better.

Looks like countersunk and epoxied. I have never seen this combination.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say it's a re-handle. Because:
  • Countersink holes around pins are waaaay large.
  • Note the mark side rocker pin, the epoxy flows up over the edge of the countersink hole
  • Epoxy squeezed out under the shield and flows down the depression in the stag to the rocker pin hole
  • Bottom shield pin poorly peened and finished
