5254 with hairline crack at pin

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

5254 with hairline crack at pin

Post by Slomo »

Ok guys I really have tried to not get on here and say what is this knife worth BUT always a but lol I purchased a 5254 from a guy last night (not from eBay) and their is a hair line crack at one of the pins. Please look at it and tell me what value I should put into it or if I should just leave it with him. I still have the option of saying I don't want it because he forgot to mention it and is giving me the option of not taking it now. Thanks in advance.

Is it for collecting or for packing? Is it mint in every other way?

If for packing, and I didn't pay a new price, I'd probably just run some pink Zap a Gap in it and call it good.

On a knife like that one it will knock off 20 dollars or so, not sure what you paid but when I sell one I would in that age and value range deduct at least that much when I listed it to compensate for the pin crack. As Wade said, if you are carrying it it is no big deal at all.

Thanks guys. I honestly bought it to add to my collection but being probably too much of a perfectionist I don't even know that I want it now. It's a 1996 and I gave $85 for it so maybe you guys can help point me in the direction I need to go with it. Thanks again for your help.

Just a bit of advice, and I recognize that each man gets to set his own standards - but if you are a perfectionist you will not like most of the knives you find. OH

If the knife is mint otherwise then $85 is not terribly bad even with the hairline crack. For me a full sized trapper is a little much for an EDC knife but it would be a good user. As for putting it in your collection, I can find something wrong with most of the knives I have if I look hard enough. It is still a nice piece.

As a point of reference, I doubt you'll be able to find a new production Case stag trapper for that price. If you aren't satisfied with it as an addition to your collection but like the knife otherwise, put it in your pocket and use it.

As Tom said Mo,if he'll knock off $20 or $30 ,I would keep it till I found one I liked better. If not ,I'd amicably return it .

I would expect to have a greater reduction in price,if the knife was worth x times more, close to X times $20 or $25.

I couldn't have said it better or agreed more!
I personally think that's a bit much for that knife with the crack but I have spent money on lots of knives that some people would think was a bit too much to spend.
If you really dig it then keep it, if you have to think about it you wont like it trust me. JMO

Gino I believe your comment "if you have to think about it you wont like it trust me" is right on the money...if I have already doubted then I can only assume it's not going to get better. Thanks for putting it that way for me.

Old Hunter you are correct it is going to be hard to find a knife that I am completely satisfied with. I do have some but for the most part I can find a little something wrong with most of them but that's something I deal with on everything I have

I greatly appreciate all of your guys help not only on this post but all the other ones I have asked different things about. You are all a great group of guys and the knowledge and resources provided here is outstanding.

Thanks again.
