winterbottom or barn board

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

winterbottom or barn board

Post by edge213 »

Is this Case Sowbelly winterbottom or barn board? I have seen some that look like this called winterbottom and some called barn board. I have also found pictures of older Case knives that were called winterbottom that looked more like worm groove. Could someone explain the difference and identity mine. Also does anyone know the name of the bone as far as color? It is TB6339.

Hi edge213,
these two knives are handled in Winterbottom bone. The term barnboard is new to me, but I don't follow the newer knives if that's where the term comes from. I can see how your scales could be called barnboard.
As for color on my knives, they are just referred to as Winterbottom as a description.
Nice knife you have there.

Thanks Joe, I thought it was barnboard, but then I saw some calling it winterbottom. My thinking was winterbottom is more like yours. On the Case website they have pictures of the different types of jigging, including barnboard and winterbottom but they aren't the best pictures making it difficult to tell the difference.

You're welcome, David.
Just so you know, my knives are Queens not Case, but same difference. I think.
