Anyone else have a Moon Stick sharpener?

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

Anyone else have a Moon Stick sharpener?

Post by jujigatame »

I found this a few weeks back among different sharpening implements that my grandfather had with his tools. I'd never seen or heard of one before. Searching the web didn't yield much information. Someone at another forum found trademark information saying Case first filed it in 1971.

It's fine ceramic that seems to be the same as the stones that Spyderco sells. I would guess it was made by the same firm that does Spyderco's as well. I did find some mentions online of a Case Moon Stone sharpener that looked to be of the same material but, again, there was not much information out there.

Does anyone else have one or know about when Case sold them?

The Moon Stick first appeared in Case's 1972 price list with a retail price of $5.10. The last catalog that it appeared in was the 1982-1983 catalog. Case did continue to offer an alumina ceramic rod sharpener after that but with wood handles to match the Case kitchen knife line.
The Moon Stone first appeared in the 1974 price list.
