The 25 Cent Fakes Get Worse

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

I think your brother is safe with his investment. I've never heard of anyone faking a modern day yellow handled Case Sodbuster.

My son brought home this fixed blade knife that I suspect is fake because of the tag stamp and no other markings. Has anyone seen this before?

Nothing wrong with it. Tang stamps on Case fixed blades are not the same as the stamps on Case Pocket knives.

Yes it’s authentic as is the sheath. It’s a very common pattern, has what’s called a “knight’s head pommel”. That stamp is called the sans serif stamp. Serifs are the little “feet” or extensions on the end of letters in some fonts - Case used both serif and sans serif stamps on fixed blades at various times. The stamp on your knife doesn’t have them, therefore it’s the sans serif stamp.

Someone who knows more than me about Case fixed blades can probably tell you approximate age and other details. Recommend you post it in the fixed blades forum here viewforum.php?f=34. Folks more interested in field blade knives will likely see it there, (You posted this in an old thread about fake Case pocket knives.) Better quality, in-focus pictures would help since the type of blade finish and other details will determine when it was made.

I think basically every Benchmade, Spyderco, Emerson, Zero Tolerance, and even other brands of tactical folders have a Chinese fake/counterfeit. However, they don't bother faking Cases, so it's yet another reason to stick with traditional knives.
