I have come across a few Permian Basin Knife Club knives during my recent effort to get back into collecting. Can someone confirm if the 1989 version is correct having a part number of 6254 in spite of it being walnut scaled? All things being equal I understand 1254 would be correct for Walnut and a 6254 would be bone. Is it correct, wrong scales, wrong blade, or OK the way it is? I believe there were a few other years I saw something similar.
Thanks in advance for any guidance.

Re: Case 54 Trapper scale material question
Is the wood on your 6254 solid or laminated? 6 is correct for laminated wood and on Case knives most of that is stained approximately walnut color. It is also possible that the club knives were etched and handled by an outside vendor who started with inexpensive Delrin handled 6254s. 6 is also correct for Delrin that is styled to look similar to brown jigged bone.

Re: Case 54 Trapper scale material question
The knife you’re asking about has a pattern number 6254. As you state it was a SFO club knife, and was made that way, with walnut handle covers. Possibly there were so few made that Case didn’t want to make a special run of blades with the walnut pattern number so they used blades they had available.
According to info on knifedb the blade etch says 1989 but the blades are stamped with 1987 date code.

Re: Case 54 Trapper scale material question
Thanks for the follow up. All that makes sense. I ultimately did not buy it but it was clearly solid wood. Probably walnut but without seeing in person it could have been Mesquite or Bois D'Arc (Osage Orange). The outside vendor thought ran through my head but since diving back into collecting Case again after a 15 year lapse I feel like my knowledge base is less than 1% of what it should be.
