Case XX Knife Wall Case/Collection
Case XX Knife Wall Case/Collection
Hello! First of all, I find this site very helpful. It is a good way to help answers questions for other people and continue to learn more yourself. In fact, I'm about to upgrade my membership level shortly. Proof is always in the pudding and this site is worth the membership cost. I don't know as much as I would like to know about Case knives. But, I'm getting there over time.
My Dad, who passed away in 1994, was a huge Case Knife collector. I inherited the Case XX Knife Wall Case/Collection that he has purchased in 1992 from an old hardware store in central Louisiana. The collection is in mint condition. None of the knives have ever been broken from the silver wire holding them in place. There are 69 Case XX knives in total in the display: 48 pocket knives, 5 sheath knives, 15 butcher knives, and a clever.
The notes from the piece of paper on the back of the display says these Case XX knives are from 1941. However, the shield on all of the knives doesn't seem to jive with that timeframe. See attached.
I'm very happy and proud to have inherited this knife collection from my Dad. It always generates lots of conversations when people visit our home.
THANK YOU and appreciate all of you that share thoughts, ideas, and recommendations!

That is an amazing display. My father has been purchasing Case knives for my brother and myself for 53 years now. I will cherish them until I pass them on to my four children.

Welcome to AAPK. You have a wonderful family heirloom there. The display case itself looks like an older one, and could very well be from the 1940s. The knives you’ve shown appear to be from the mid- to late 1960s based on what I can see. There are a few stags on the board so that would also correspond to early 1970s or before. A few more clear pictures of tangs from knives on the board could help determine their vintage.
It’s possible the retail store owner could have had the board re-made at the factory due to some its original patterns having been discontinued, or could have replaced some of the original knives on the board with current (at the time) knives. Many older boards had stag or other materials for the knives handle covers, which over time were discontinued. Even though the basic pattern was still being produced, the handle materials had changed. Stag was becoming more scarce, celluloid was being replaced by more modern synthetics, etc. It was not uncommon in the late 1960s and early 1970s to see display boards that had missing knives - the pattern or handle material was no longer being made so they sold the knives off the board, knowing they couldn’t be replaced from factory production. Eventually they ordered a replacement board (or the Case sales rep did it for them).
You have a fine piece of knife history! I hope someday my sons will cherish those I plan on leaving to them.

Awesome display and
to AAPK!
My only problem with such a display would be the fact I like to coon finger my knives from time to time.
