Everyday Carry

Hello Everyone...

Haven't been on the forum(s) for a couple of weeks...just got back to
Ohio from my annual vacation with family up on the Cape...three weeks
in Hyannisport...(well, can't exactly say I'm thrilled to be back in
Cleveland...)

Anyway, I was wondering, (if this is an appropriate topic)...what everyone
uses as their everyday carry knife? I've gotten loads of info just by reading the posted topics almost everyday here, and am really impressed
by the knowledge of those on the forum(s).

I'd be really interested to know what people out there think is a good,
utilitarian pocket knife to have available on their person everyday. I
happen to be really attached to a Case Medium Stockman, red jigged bone handles, and CV blades...I carry it all the time.

Mine rotates according to my mood, and sometimes according to my dress.
Today I'm in jeans, so I can comfortably carry my Case chestnut bone CV trapper.
If I were wearing slacks, I'd carry something smaller; most likely a Queen City small trapper (1095, red wormgroove handles) or a Queen bonestag canoe.
A good across-the-board carry is my 8OT.
These are the primary users in my collection (which is made up entirely of users... ).

My EDC is a Rick Hinderer XM-18 (with orange G-10) & Peter Atwood Solar Arc. When I am in Boston, my EDC is Solar Arc & Patrick Nihiser "Little Teaser". Or I carry my small Sebbie. I always carry my Leatherman Wave on my belt, but in my pocket, I used to switch from my Case Stockman 318 to my SAK sportsman. However, I recently got a Leatherman Micra, and I'm hooked. I forgot just how useful a little tool it is. I used to have one, but lost it and replaced it with a Squirt P4. The fact that the tools were on the outside was pretty cool, but it seemed too small to really be useful, and the knife eventually got all wobbly. The Micra is small as well, but it just seems a bit tougher for my tastes. And no, it won't fix your car or do any BIG cutting chores, but day to day, it habdles all my needs. It's scissors are tough and bigger then the SAKs, the knife sharp as a razor, and it fits extremely well on my Keychain, which is with me ALL the time. So, my Wave handles all my big chores, but for just about anything else that comes along in my day, the Micra rules!!!

I've never had a knife as good as this Chris Bostwick folder. It is a P-E-R-F-E-C-T fit. We have been partners as soon as I got it. I carry it in the leather pouch and take it out at the end of the day.

Hi Bill,
That looks like your Arizona knife, it's a beauty. I bet you recognize that Bostwick, gotta tell you, a knife never fit better, far and away my favorite. I picked up some knives from Wendell Carson last weekend also.

I always carry a vintage Remington. It is a R3059, 3 7/8" premium stockman. It has nickel silver handles and carbon steel blades that will really hold an edge.

Well, maybe I don't really CARRY it any further than from the knife drawer to the cutting board.. ..but we do use it most every day. It's the first Chef's knife ever done by David Winston...done for my wife a couple years ago.

I usually carry a folding plier multitool, A SAK and a traditional slipjoint, the multitool is usually an old Leatherman original, sometimes a Leatherman SideClip, the SAK is usually a Victorinox Huntsman, sometimes a Victorinox Farmer, the slipjoint is usually a Schrade stockman (897UH or 98OT or 34OT). lately I've been carrying an old Camillus Military Utility, just to keep Camillus in my mind now that they are in trouble.

Wow, that's a nice chef knife!!!!!.

The picture shows some of the knives mentioned and since I don't own such a nice chef knife I've included an old forged carbon Usuba which cuts fine.

I always run with a SOG paratool on my belt and a case mini copperlock in my watch pocket.

My Monday to Friday EDC is a Bulldog copperhead and my weekend EDC is an Indian Head stag handle stockman. I have nothing but good things to say about both of them

Some of my favorite and most frequently carried EDC's are:

-- Moore Maker 3 7/8" yellow punchblade stockman. Camillus made, nothing fancy, but something about it just feels really right.

-- Shapleigh's 3 5/8 buffalo horn cattle knife. If you can get past the BS about recently discovered 50 year old parts etc etc, it's a very nice Olbertz made slipjoint. Fit and finish every bit as good as a Schatt and Morgan Railsplitter, with better steel.

-- Case yellow CV mini Copperlock. Elegant small gents folder with great steel for thirty bucks. I carry this one to the office a lot.

-- Bulldog "Ground Hog". I carry this one when I'm going to be doing any whittling, which is actually pretty often. Best whittling knife I know of hands down. It puts a congress to shame.

-- Schrade 8OT. No explanation necessary I presume.

-- SAK black tinker, for when pure practicality is the goal. If I'm working around the house, that's what I'll carry.

-- In addition to these I generally carry a Spyderco Endura, Delica, or Native in the opposite pocket.

I'm not big on belt sheathes, but I'm never far from a Leatherman Wave as I've got one in the house and another in the car.

Then I have about thirty other knives in my EDC drawer which don't get carried as often, but they do get carried!

Well...this forum is absolutely great...I'm glad I went ahead and started this thread a few days ago. Just some amazing knives, and some really cool opinions on everyday carries...(so much new info).

I've learned quite a bit just by investigating some of the knives and knife-
makers mentioned, and visiting their websites. And some of the photos!

Hey Butch, after reading your post I dusted off my Indian Head 4" stag stockman and carried it today. I'd forgotten how nice it is. I think we'll add this to the regular EDC rotation.

A knife I really like and at a price you can't beat is one made by Wendall Carson. I just bought a Swayback Muskrat Trapper with Sea Cow scales. The quality is outstanding and the brand is the Fightin Bull. I found out about them from a post by El Lobo, I should say I had seen them on eBay but El Lobo's post was a convincing one. I will buy another as a carrier and keep the other as a collectable. He makes a very fine knife.

Small hijack here, as I've never carried this knife.

However, Hukk has been a prolific poster as of late and has contibuted much to the forums. So as they sorta say...this one's for you.

Wendell Carson Trapper... in black baleen.

For those who may wonder...baleen is what whales, those who don't have teeth, use to sort of strain their food. To me it has a feel similar to horn...but is made of Keratin.

It may not be quite as pretty as abalone, but I flat guar-an-tee they put up a big fight if you try to take it from their mouths.

I've got four of Wendell's knives and I agree, very nice and a great price for what amounts to a semi custom. I'll try to take some Fightin Bull pics. I do EDC one of them, a 4" red bone stockman, so unlike some people's posts, this is not a thread hijack.
