Nice or Over Priced?

Post by 1967redrider »

Just saw these S.O.G.s on Blade HQ. Compared to the Bokers, I'm thinking I'll pass. What's your thoughts?

Thanks for your replies. ::handshake::

Good lookin' knives John! ::tu:: S.O.G. makes some good knives just like Boker does, and you know... price is subjective to what you're willing to pay. 8)

Thanks for your reply, Mark. I think these are $50 - $60 overpriced compared to the Bokers. ::shrug::

I saw these yesterday when I got the email or maybe it was this morning. I can't find them on the website now but I liked the smaller version with the small Tanto blade that said it was "Coming Soon". It was a smaller blade than the one pictured above.

I like to have a safety switch on my autos and I like that the firing button on these also serves as the safety switch. I might end up getting one eventually if the feedback from owners is favorable.

Will do. I'll definitely post pics here if I get one.

I found the one I was referring to. A 4 inch handle with a 2 inch Tanto blade would make a great box opener. Spending 40+ hours a week in a warehouse, I tend to open a lot of boxes. Might be hard for me to resist when they are released.

I say that it is pretty nice to be USA made and at that price. However, what we don't know is how much of the parts are actually made in the USA. I would say many components come from Taiwan and/or China.

I got to looking closely at these SOGs. My focus was on their autos that have a blade about half the length of the handle. In other words, their California-legal models.

I don’t live in California but I wanted one of these short blade/long handle autos anyway.

I had almost decided on the SOG model pictured below but then it dawned on me that I already own a Hogue auto that I really like and Hogue also makes a short blade/long handle auto.

So I ended up buying the Hogue instead of a SOG. I’m already familiar with the quality of Hogue autos, which is excellent by the way, and the price was only $2.51 more than the SOG that I would have bought if I had chosen SOG.

I feel a little out of place posting a Hogue knife in a SOG thread but I promised to keep ya’ll posted.

I have never handled any SOG auto so I cannot comment on the quality. I do however, feel very satisfied with the Hogue that I chose and the price that I paid for it.

Here’s the SOG that I would have chosen. Priced at $124.95 but not released yet.
SOG not Hogue.jpg
Here’s the Hougue Microswitch that I bought instead. Priced at $127.46.

And the grey Microswitch that I’ve owned for a few months. Priced at $144.46 due to the longer blade.

Smart. And I like both the Hogues. I think they will both serve you equally well.

I just threw down on the smaller non-serrated S.O.G., mainly because of their USA Made claim. 🇺🇸

Will keep you posted.

Thank you, Mark. The package had a little surprise inside too. It came with a second filler plate to fill the indentation where the pocket clip goes. My first Hogue only came with a filler plate for one side. I had to request the second one from Hogue which they sent me at no charge. Of course, that's a moot point for anyone that uses pocket clips.

I'm gonna have a hard time choosing which knife to toss in my pocket each day when I leave for work but that's part of the fun.

I know exactly what you're referring to Rick! My AGA Campolin "Zero" came with the little plate to cover the pocket-clip holes, and when I first saw it I thought it was absolutely brilliant, I wish ALL knives came with one! Guess you'll just have to alternate between knives each day so you won't have to decide! 8)

I agree. It's an inexpensive part and many folks do like to carry without the pocket clip. Wouldn't cost other manufacturers too much to include an extra one with each knife.

I happen to have some comparison pics of my first Hogue. It didn't look terrible without the filler plate but it certainly does look better with it.
