Ah, but you have to remember that the marlin spike on a knife is NOT for use as a weapon. It's sole purpose in life is to make it easier to release knots in ropes.Checkered past wrote: ↑Sun Apr 18, 2021 9:31 pm Got this Official Knife Canadian Girl Guides today. Made by C.Johnson & Company Sheffield. Couldn't find to many pics of it so figured I would post it here. The spike seems a bit aggressive for the Girl Guides. Anyway here it is, also a shot with its big brother...
Girl Guides were not wimps. They went camping. A lot. Knots from tent lines needed to be loosed when taking down the tents. The packs of the day weren't light weight aluminum frames covered in nylon with velcro or zippers. Ropes were used to lash bags and equipment to a wood or metal pack frame. After a day of hiking, those knots tend to lock up tighter than a rusty nut & bolt.
Some of the Girl Guide groups may have used donkeys and mules to carry camping equipment and supplies for extended camping trips. I've seen pictures of Canadian BS using donkeys/mules, so the Girl Guides probably did as well. Gotta get those pack frames off some how.
Also, many of them were of a rural background and worked/lived on farms. Undoing knots was a frequent chore.
I've carried a Kabar 1121 rigging knife since 1982 for the sole purpose of having a spike for ropes. I doubt the blade has been used 30 times since then as I always have fixed blades which are quicker to use.

This one got in yesterday, but I was a little late showing it. Camillus electrician's knife, late 1970s to late 1980s. A very nice knife that'll see some carry time. Thanks, GSPTOPDOG!

Re: Mail Call !-Post your new pick-ups here............
Received a couple more Camillus this week.
First, another Camillus 21 Pony Jack to add to the corral. It has the long line Camillus tang stamp on the front side of the clip blade, with 21 on the pile side and a pen secondary blade. It has the brown jigged( what Camillus called "Brownstag") handles, and was not produced with a shield. Blades are tight, great snap, no wobble, have the factory luster, but does have some spotting. Inside of blade well and springs are clean. The only thing I've done is oil the joints. Here are the photos. Next I added a Camillus 14 Serpentine Jack. It is also has the Camillus long line tang stamp on the front side of the clip blade with 14 on the pile side, with a pen secondary blade. The blades are tight, no wobble, and great snap. They have the original luster, but do have some staining and spots. The Handles are the Brownstag handles with a federal shield. The handles do have some slight oxidation, but I believe I can cure that with the usual warm mineral oil soak. Inside the blade well is clean with just some slight spotting on the springs. At the present time all I've done is oil the joints. Here are the photos.

USPS said #3 was "out for delivery" at about 0800 this morning BUT it never made it. 2100 and it's still "out for delivery". My monthly life insurance bill showed up but not the knife. Go figure. I don't think I've ever seen this situation before. Let's hope it does get delivered tomorrow (Saturday).

My two latest bottom feeder acquisitions...
A 10 dot Case 6333 basket case. It was super rusty, and needed a bone patch on the pile side,
but she cleaned up nicely. This one will be opening lots of mail and cleaning under fingernails.
Not bad for $5.00 though!
The other is a 1988 Buck 110. It had been used, but not abused. She just needed a little TLC
and a sharpening.I did clean her up though since the sheath had deposited the lovely green gunk
that the like to leave when interacting with brass bolsters. A pretty good woods toter for $30.00.
