I got 5 Rough Rider Kit Knives I plan on giving as gifts to some of the grandkids. The metal is rough so you first have to sand and polish all the metal. The scales are precut and drilled, but have rough edges so they have to be shaped and sanded to be flush with the liners and bolsters. After assembly you do all the finally polishing and also the blades don't come with a sharp edge.

Here is one that I'm almost finished with.
20210601_084211.jpg
I also got one of these Lever Lock knives with stained Hickory handles. There are no makings on it, but so far I'm finding it is possibly a knockoff of a German knife sold by Key West Knife Works. The knife is heavy and I wouldn't carry it unless I had suspenders on my jeans. I will just put it in the back of a display case and just look at it.

David! I just wanted to give you some insight about the leverlock knife you bought. I've owned one for about 2 years, and it was purchased at www.dhgate.com , a Chinese site. I looked at Key West and many of the knives they offer come from these sites. The reference they state to a German knife is strictly referring to the Hubertus leverlock knives which look nothing like this one, but they are leverlocks, and that's about as much as they're German designed. They can be purchased for about US$18. from these sites, and K/W simply add their mark-up to US$39.95. My knife also has NO markings, so they're not counterfeits because there isn't an original to copy from, they ARE the originals. For an inexpensive knife I was pleasantly surprised at how solid and well-built they are, and mine snaps open with authority and locks-up tight every time. Just thought you might want to know! Very nice builds, BTW! Mark! 8)

I kept ignoring the post for days hoping that someone would take it before I caved. I finally reached out to Roland and it was still available. This is now the nicest knife in my collection. Custom Joel Chamblin Gentleman’s pen knife, or half whittler to me. The pearl on this is exceptional. I have seen a lot, A LOT of pearl handles but none compare to this one. I have never seen the shades and hues of blue that this pearl has in it, my pictures don’t do it justice. It’s simply elegant. The 14kt gold pins and shield are over the top. I wish I knew how he put those rounded headed pins in that pearl with no deformation. The blades are 154-CM stainless steel. The liners and bolsters are 416 stainless steel. Simply an exceptional knife. Thank you Roland for giving me the chance to own this beauty.
Nice one Mark, shame to not carry and enjoy it. Joel is a great maker. Lovely pearl and nice gold work.

These 3 are the last of 25 knives I've received in the past few months from and through Mark at SSk, and we certainly saved 3 of the best for last! First up is a made in Germany Puma Medici 7 3/8" oal swinguard lockback, next is a made in the US GEC Tideout Beavertail 8 1/4" oal slip-joint linerlock, and finally a made in Japan Moki Kaicut Hiro designed 7 1/2" oal lockback. Three new beauties for the collection! 8)

Thanks Ken, I appreciate your comments. That Hiro lockback is a very special knife, it's built nearly to perfection and feels really good in-hand. 8)

Thanks Mark.

I like the 500 series knives too. You get the Drop Point blade that you mentioned and also a Nickel Silver frame and bolsters. No brass on these knives. That reminds me that I think I read somewhere that the Duke has a Stainless Steel frame and bolsters instead of Nickel Silver. Not sure why it's different than the other 500's but I'm going to have look that up again to refresh my memory.

I need to try a 501 eventually as it's the only one I don't have from the 500 series.

Yah, I much prefer nickel silver over brass for hardware. Please be sure to post your 501 when you get one. 8)
