Cubs took two of three from St. Louis but they're still two games down wind in the division. Tonight's game was still 0-0 at the end of nine. Ended up 2-1, Cubs win. Hey Pirates, here we come.

Newest MLB poster boy for stupidity has got to be Pirates first baseman Will Craig for his play on Javier Baez in the third inning of the Cubs game today. 3 problems with this play and Craigs response. He evidently did not know there were 2 outs in the inning, otherwise he would have tagged first base and the inning would have been over. He probably had no idea where he was on the field and that he was close to first base, certainly closer than Baez. He had no knowledge of the MLB rule that if the batter is recorded as the third out at first base, it makes no difference if a runner scores, it will not count. Those of you who have not seen it need to. First rundown play I have ever seen between home and first.

That was definitely a head-scratcher, for sure. And why he tossed the ball to the catcher at the last second instead of just tagging the runner, did he think the runner was going to be safe on home plate or what??doglegg wrote: ↑Fri May 28, 2021 1:20 amAmazing to watch. My old high school coach would have had a fit! He was a stickler for fundamentals and drilled us endlessly on what to do in all manner of oddball situations. Physical errors are just part of the game. Mental errors would get you extra laps at practice. If you were lucky that was all.

I was out of the room when that went down but got to see the re-runs, over and over and.................. I think that one will be filed under major team brain fart. The craziest thing was not only did the Cubs score on the play but Baez ended up making it all the way to second base.

I thought that only happened to me, i.e., regardless of how long may I sit watching a ball game, the minute I get up to go to the bathroom (to empty the tank) or kitchen (to refill the tank), some incredible, amazing play will happen. Never fails.

Re: Are There Any BASEBALL Fans On The Forum?
It always amazes me that knowledgeable baseball fans as well as Will Craig , a professional player don't understand the rule on a run not counting if the batter makes the third out at first base. Of course this rule was put in and is most frequently used on double plays because of the physical impossibility of an umpire being able to see the ball hit the mitt of the first baseman, the foot of the batter hit first base, and the foot of the runner hit home plate simultaneously. The rule is found in the official rules of baseball 4.09, how a team scores. I can recall a hypothetical situation discussed years ago that shows another situation where the rule would apply other than on the double play.
Bases are loaded, two out. The batter takes a full swing at the pitch and hits what amounts to a swinging bunt that lands near the pitchers mound. The pitcher fields the ball, but makes a wild throw to first that goes down the right field line. But in the meantime, the batter in his attempt to leave the batters box and run to first blows out his knee and is lying on the ground near home plate. As these two things are happening, all three base runners cross home plate. The right fielder retrieves the ball and throws it in to the first baseman for the third out because the batter never reached first base. NONE OF THE THREE RUNS WOULD COUNT.

BUSTER POSEY's 3-run homer at the top of the 8th puts SF Giants ahead of LA Dodgers 5-2. As much as I like the Dodgers (and the Angels), I always enjoy seeing the Giants beat them. (Giants were my very first favorite major league team when I lived in the bay area 1969-1972.)

LA Dodger AUSTIN BARNS--Bottom 9th, 2 Out, 3-Run HR ties the game with ALBERT PUJOLS coming up to bat. But, wait...hold on a minute...SF Giants MIKE TAUCHMIN robs Pujols of walk-off HR and sends game into extra inning(s).
THIS is why I LOVE this game!

Re: Are There Any BASEBALL Fans On The Forum?
Q, that’s why I love baseball too. It amazes me how someone (BTW it wasn’t Abner Doubleday) determined 90 feet was the right distance to space the bases, to make a routine grounder an easy out and others a close play or a hit, and other nuances of the game. And 60 feet, 6 inches (6 inches?!) was the distance from the pitchers rubber to home plate to make a fast ball hard (but not impossible) to hit and a curve ball break before it reaches the batter.
Jerry, those close low-run pitchers duels are my favorite games. Fans who know the game and understand the strategies enjoy the tight, low scoring “small ball” games because every pitch, every play is important to the outcome. If you REALLY watch the game, every pitch has you on the edge of your seat and you’re thinking along with the players and coaches what to do next. Hit-and-run, sacrifice bunts, double steals, double plays and outfield assists, etc. When someone tells me 1-0 is boring I know immediately they’re a casual fan. They make me a nervous wreck.
if you’re posting here you probably know what I mean.

Tough month ahead for the Cubs. They're all banged up and lost Bote yesterday for who knows how long. June will test their metal, starting off with two series again'st the Padres sandwiched around a four game series against the Giants. Last half of the month against the Cardinals, Mets, Marlins, Indians, Dodgers & Brewers. I'm just hoping they can hold their own in June.
One game at a time. Last meeting with Cincinnati today. Won't see them again until July.
