Finally found an older axe head under €10 shipped. It's a little one but I just want it to chop kindling into smaller kindling. Otherwise, it could turn into real work.

Ochsenkopf Grün (Ox head Green) Ochsenkopf calls itself "Germany's oldest Axt maker."
9 cm or 3 1/2" edge
600 grams or 1,3 pounds

It's a nice start for the "few old axes" I'd like to own. I'll pick up a 14" - 16" Hickory handle for it, clean it up a bit & maybe even throw some paint on it.

Nice! Finding old, but good quality axes can be a challenge. I've been looking for a Pulaski-type axe for quite some time.

I found my first three axes as a teenager. We used to lease a place (for the acreage for hay and livestock) that adjoined ours, and a bunch of kids liked to pilfer stuff from the buildings that lived near the property (whom my Granddad and I often would run off). I found several axes those kids had been playing with, and took them all home. I use two regularly, with a True Temper 6 lb. axe and a True Temper 3 lb. boy's axe that has been fitted to a hatchet handle. I have an 1890s Kelly Works double bit felling axe that is a wallhanger that was found among the work (and it could have cut the trees used to build our barn). I also found a splitting maul the man who owned the property borrowed from my Granddad in the '70s and never returned. I have another felling axe I need to rehandle. But, these days, I mostly use an Estwing, since the handle can't fall off.

I have pretty much that same axe; which Stihl here in the US markets as the "Camp and Forestry Hatchet" and sources from Ochsenkopf. Unlike my other go-to axes, it's hatchet-size but takes on the larger axe jobs I'd get my double bit fe. I've cut smaller fallen trees, driven wedges for trees I was saw cutting, and split wood with it. It's just enough axe, mainly due to the larger handle. I wish Stihl included a real cover like my Estwing, and having a leather cover made would cost more than the axe. You got a pretty good deal. The Stihl is $30 here at the local Stihl dealer, yet the Ochsenkopf is double that (actually closer to $70) from the dealer I buy my Knipex tools from.

I did some bidding on some eBay lots again. Most of what the seller had was one knife or two I wanted, but not really worth what they ended up going for. The low-cost lots of this seller often contain a couple beat up, but solid American-made traditional knives and/or decent but imported knife; and a ton of POS crap. I bid on four lots, and won only one; which was surprisingly the one that had the best stuff. What surprised me was that I got the lot I actually wanted for $25 shipped; unlike the last time, I got a ton of POS knives (which actually were so bad, I didn't even include them in my POS box for last year's exchange) and the special linesman's (MADI OneFlip Safety Lineman's Knife) cable stripping knife so dull, I couldn't sharpen it.

Here's the interesting knives.

Milwaukee Fastback Tanto. $25 new, this one looks new. When working around others, I carry cheaper knives. Both my Benchmades cost me close to $60 used, and are $100 or more new, and if they got lost/stolen/damaged I'd be very angry. These have the same type of locking mechanism as Benchmades (replacing the stupid button lock older ones have), are available locally, and they have a good warranty too (meaning if I take the busted knife to Fastenal, I should get a new one). Since they're imports, I normally wouldn't go out of my way to buy one. I've had the fixed blade (bought new) they made, and wasn't impressed by its steel that much. Hopefully, this one is different.

Purina (probably Kutmaster) Stockman. Back when I was little, the guy (retired from the business about 10 years ago) my Granddad bought cattle mineral from was associated with Purina. One of the kids I went to school had parents, who for many years, operated a Purina feed store. And then, when the first guy retired, a friend of mine (who passed away recently) and her husband had a short-lived Purina mineral business.

Outdoor Edge Mini Blaze ($20 new); which should make a dandy fifth-pocket carry knife at just under 3" closed. I wasn't impressed by their products at first, but got a RazorLite EDC in the last POS Exchange that I mostly use as a box cutter, since the blades are longer, but replaceable (and no more expensive than my good Lenox utility knife blades. It's pretty nice.

And a spare hobo. I let my buddy (a Scoutmaster) let his scouts use my old BSA mess kit which had my old Coghlan's in it since I rarely use it myself, and it hadn't cost me much to assemble (Esbit, $10; knife $5, Esbit-size cookpot $5; Spork $2 Lighter $2; fabric bag originally pillowcase packaging). I don't like using a secondhand one, however.

I like my fixed blades in carbon steel, with a drop-point blade, and on the small side with around 3.5" blades and not a lot of belly in the blade shape. Handles other than wood or bone (usually plastic). I had been a big fan of this model since new, but I couldn't afford it then, and CRKT had also discontinued it some time ago. And besides, I'm not the kind of guy who pays $70 for a China-made knife.

CRKT's MSRP is $70, but BladeHQ had it in their bargain bin for $20 for "slight rust in the cutting edge." It's gonna happen anyway when I use it, so not a problem in my book. It will likely disappear once I've touched up the edge. Heck, even when stropping it should disappear. Perfectly fine ones I just learned are $25, so I'm buying another for my farm pack to stay there.


CRKT Mossback Hunter (Tom Krein design). Steel, SK-5 Carbon Steel. Tang:full Handle material, G-10. Just under 3 1/4" blade, 7 1/4 OAL. Blade thickness, 0.12 inches (not too thick, not too thin either). Weight including the sheath, 5.5 ounces, so not really more than the Mora Robust currently serving as my work knife. It met all of the specifications mentioned above, and it has a very comfortable handle, an integrated guard, a decent-size lanyard tube, and jimping down most of the spine.

I am making my own sheath. Nylon "will do" but probably will wear out fast, given how many deep scuffs the Mora sheath has on it from scraping rocks, the ground, and equipment. The tube style and position of the belt loop are perfect, so I will use it as a pattern if I go with leather.

This is really unusual: Came off eBay for $20.

The pattern is a basic penknife, but it is really odd in how it is set up. Instead of a smaller pen blade, it features a sacking needle/awl with sewing eye. Also, the back scale has a three-inch ruler.


The seller calls it a carpenter's knife. Wilton Royal is a very old British manufacturer of carpeting--founded in 1741! and still in business today. I believe this knife to have been produced for their employees. My great-uncle worked in a yarn mill, and explained the whole process to me. The pen blade would be great for cutting up tangled fibers from the loom and spinning equipment; but the sewing awl is a mystery. But, that's the only explanation I can muster from what my great uncle explained, and years of watching How It's Made.

I had a Böker Magnum camp knife before & it was a really nice knife. I believe they ( "Magnum" ) may be made in China. I'm not really sure. But they are still very nice knives. And the price range on em is ok too.
