Story continued:

After the Flea Market we drove to another little village to a fabric store. My wife and two girls bought some fabric for masks. I bought 3 pieces of artificial leather to make some knife slips. Now..., if I knew how to use the sewing machine, I'd make some. Maybe someone will teach me this winter. ::shrug::

And after that, we drove to a lake in the woods & took our dog Jake for a walk by the lake. My daughter Jazlin & Jake also got there feet/paws wet. ::nod::

To be continued after lunch time. ::super_happy::

The girls gathered some pine cones, sticks & stuff at the lake. Then yesterday, they made a fall reath for our door from the stuff they collected.

Altogether, a very nice day! ::tu:: ::nod::

Here is the artificial leather I bought and some pictures of the reath the girls made. Thanks for reading & looking! ::handshake::

Great finds, Tom!

And I really did enjoy the local cuisine during my time in Germany. Great food meant to be enjoyed, not rushed.

Tom, your wreath maker is very creative - great job! I bet you can get some sewing lessons too. Is that Spätzle on your plate? One of my favorite German foods! My problem is always whether to choose the meal with Spätzle or Bratkartoffln - I like them both. ::facepalm::

I have to be honest - traditional German food is not for me. Actually, there are very few Northern European foods I like. I have tried, I really have - I'm a fairly adventurous eater, but the flavors and spices of Northern Europe just don't agree with me. Maybe it is because my family heritage is from a more Mediterranean climate - but anything North of Southern France just doesn't seem to work for me. I'm not a big fan of caraway, dill, mustard or some of the other common German flavors & spices.

With the exception of beer & pretzels, of course!!

Your loss, my gain! Spätzle is a rich egg noodle (I think it’s the way it’s cut that makes it unique to Southern Germany, Austria and surrounding area - they have the same thing in parts of France, but as with most things the French have a different name for it.) Bratkartoffeln is pan fried potatoes, usually fried with a little onion in bacon grease or butter.

If you didn’t like those I’d be very surprised.

My wife and I took a little road trip over to the French Colonial area of SW Illinois and then on over to Missouri. We went to Prairie du Rocher and Fort de Chartres and then on to Modoc where we took the ferry across the mighty Miss to the historic town of Ste Genevieve, Mo.

Ste Genevieve is the oldest European settlement in Missouri, settled primarily by French Canadians in the early 1700s. A flood forced them to resettle on higher ground around 1785 and a significant number of early buildings survive. After the French loss to the British in 1762 and the Treaty of Paris, France ceded land West of the Mississippi to Spain. This brought over from Illinois, an influx of French settlers who had no desire to live under British rule. The Spanish had a "hands off" approach to Ste Gen and it prospered greatly in this time period, so much so, that it was considered the most prosperous area of the Louisiana territory.

There was fertile agricultural lands, great hunting and trapping, and lead mines in the area. Fur trading and intermarriage with the Indians led to good relations with the mighty Osage nation, meaning a relatively peaceful existence as well. Ste Gen provided a major portion of the food needs of New Orleans, shipping tons of grains and flour down the Mississippi. This, while farming the Old World way with oxen and wheeled carts. French customs and traditions continued all through the 1800s and are still honored today and French surnames are still common in the area.

A few photos - a couple of historic houses built with the French style of vertical log construction date back to the 1700s. The one has a reconstructed stockade fence which was used to keep free roaming agricultural animals out of yards and gardens. The limestone house is an early 1800s Federal style.

The "Brick House" is where we had lunch. Built in 1785, it is purported to be the first brick house West of the Mississippi.

Great pictures, Ike! The old houses are really neat but I've got a question. It appears the ferry is guided/tethered to a cable system, how does that effect other river traffic? ::hmm::

No, that is just my crappy photography. Here is a pic I got online, if you enlarge it you can see that the cable is just a part of the ferry.

10-4. ::tu:: That makes sense, seeing the cable and pulley made me think of the old ferry's with the rope or cable that allowed them to remain in position on a flowing creek or river. Do they call the boat a tug or a tow when they do that work?

Right or wrong, I have always referred to boats working the rivers as towboats. ::shrug::

Yes Ike. There were only two residences on the slope. I was only about a fifth of the way up and actually much closer to the shore than the view from the top. Maybe two miles as the crow flies. But as you can see, Micah had a considerable climb. Most routes to the top require using ropes.

Over the last couple of days I have had 5 of these little guys parading down the middle of the street in front of my house. They must have hatched in the last few days, and are using their instincts to try to find their way to a pond down at the end of our block. When I picked them up, they were a little "parched", so I put them in a coffee can with a little water in it and that revived them pronto. Note the size of these snappers compared to a quarter, they must be right out of the shell. I took all 5 down to the pond and dumped them in.
