Pictures of Miscellaneous Stuff & Things

If you can think of something to talk about that is not related to knives, discuss it here.

TwoFlowersLuggage wrote: Mon Aug 03, 2020 1:16 am If we could fully harness the heat energy lost in an internal combustion engine, our energy worries would be over. There is even a name for a zero-heat loss engine - it is called an "adiabatic engine". (adiabatic means "without heat transfer") However, leave it to the marketing dweebs to misuse the term. In the 1950s, they started using "adiabatic engine" to mean any engine with a higher thermal efficiency than the traditional numbers of 20-30%. There is still research into this stuff, and the researchers are up around 50% thermal efficiency now. https://www.sae.org/news/2019/04/high-e ... dci-engine

A true adiabatic engine would be very cool - literally! It would be absolutely cool to the touch and would produce no hot exhaust. It would get amazing fuel economy and would have a power/displacement ratio unlike anything seen today.

Don't even get me started on what we could be doing with hydrogen and natural gas...

That reminds me of the piston vs. gas tube on AR-15s. A gas tube used to cycle an AR bolt creates a lot of heat and carbon from a .556 cartridge; if you removed the bolt after firing it would burn you. You can fire 30 rounds out of a piston AR, pull the bolt right out and handle it bare handed, no issues whatsoever. Down side to the piston- if it wears out it's harder and more expensive to replace. Field cleaning a gas tube/bolt carrier group is relatively easy.

Looks good!
I soak 'em in a cooler, husk on, for about an hour so, then put 'em on the grill, husk intact. All that moisture in the husk steams the corn, but allows the smoke to permeate enough to get that grilled flavor. I don't like dry, hard, burnt kernels that come from grilling sans husk, but that's me.
Hey Steve.. Thanks for this tip.. ::handshake:: Gonna try this the next time we get husked corn!! ::super_happy::

Pull off all the leafy/floppy portions of the husk, along with as much silk as you can without peeling back the husk, before soaking.
Rotate every so often to prevent burning one side. The husk will brown, but you don't want it burnt black.

I found this thing the other day at a thrift store.

I believe it is a compass case for a Remington Compass.
Does anyone know for sure?

I thought Compass also but now that you mention watch did Remington ever make a stopwatch?
I could could see a stem coming out the top, but it would be awkward to use I think with the flap in the way.

The leather Remington case looks awfully new to me.

Reminds me of the Swiss Army watches from a few years ago.

But, a Google Image Search turned up these, at least three of which are battery operated.

I find it kind of strange to make it look like a pocket knife for these types of uses.

If so, why would they make it a pocket knife.
Maybe I need to try to take better pictures.

Colonel, I have no idea either.
I will probably never find out .
But I think it will look cool hanging around my collection.
It's also a nice conversation piece.

Do you suppose someone made a customized clock weight? You know like the ones that look like pine cones on the cuckoo type clock with the chains. ::shrug::
