When I decided several years ago to move from a 1911 to a polymer pistol for EDC, I drove an hour to a range that has a wide variety of rentals available. In fact it’s hard to find a popular handgun they don’t have. On recommendations from a couple of LEO friends and my son, I was inclined toward a Glock when I started. My son is also big on H&K and Sig.

After two trips to that range, and several hundred rounds through a dozen different handguns including a couple of revolvers, the biggest thing I learned is I can’t hit the proverbial broad side of a barn with a Glock. Great pistols obviously, but something about them, I think it’s the grip angle, just doesn’t work for me.

Ken, they surely are different. I'm not knocking their quality at all, even though some of my friends and I do enjoy ribbing each other over the Glock v. 1911 thing.

A couple of friends of mine who love 1911's and hate Glocks have really become enamored with the Sig p320. I need to go handle one of them.

Wade I'd suggest you take a look at the CZ P 10-C if you're interested in a great striker fired polymer pistol. With your big paws you might even like the full size version, the CZ P 10-F.

Y'all need to look at Ruger's selection of polymer pistols. Fair price point.
I guess they get overlooked because they don't cost big $$.

I noticed I neglected to mention in my prior post that after my trial of various handguns I narrowed my preferences at the time to the Walther P99 and the S&W M&P Compact, both 9 mm. In the end I bought the M&P. Carried it a few years, then when the M&P Shield came out I eventually switched to it. It’s perfect, at least for me.

As I said, before you lay out your cash, try out several and find what’s right for you.

Then there’s the whole thing to do over again trying to find the right holster! Unfortunately that’s something you can’t rent and try out before purchasing.

Sorry, it was about 12 years ago. It was a P99 I think. Don’t know why I said PPK. Getting old I guess. I fixed it.

The M&P Compact was new at the time. Maybe the Walther was a PPS. I don’t think the PPK had been made yet at that time. I liked the Walther, whatever model it was.

I got a M&P .22 also, which has the same mechanics as the 9 mm M&P but less expensive to shoot. (At the time the .22 version was made by Walther for S&W).

The Shield came out a couple years later. It was an immediate hit so it was difficult to find one - they were on back order everywhere. And then Obama happened, and you really couldn’t find a Shield or anything else for a good while and couldn’t even find .22 ammo.

Ken, my journey started with a Springfield XDs 45acp. It was a good gun and was very reliable. But I couldn't hit anything with it. Then I shot a friend's 1911 and the angel choirs sang!

Later I shot another friend's S&W M&P guns. He has an M&P 9 and an M&P 45 pro. Both were very shootable and reliable I liked them a lot and I have often looked at the 22 version too.

On that note another friend of mine in TN has shot idpa for years and has shot most every brand at one point or another. He's like me, he likes anything that goes bang, lol. But for the last several years he's shot an M&P in matches. According to him there's nothing out of the box, stock, that is as accurate as an M&P. His words, not mine. But from what you have said, and the others I know that have one they seem to be fine firearms in any of their configurations.

I have a Colt .45 ACP Gold Cup Elite with the original box & paperwork, 2 magazines and a (.22-.45) Conversion Unit in its original box that I’m thinking of selling. I also have about 600 rounds of Winchester 230 grain ammo that go with the gun.

I truly don’t recall if guns can or are transacted here, what’s the scoop?

Recently purchased a Mossberg rifle in .270 Winchester. Good walnut stock; good optics; fluted barrel and bolt. Think I'll have to get some shooting sticks as my steadiness is not what it one was.

That's a great looking rifle! I especially like the stippling instead of checkering. The Vortex scope should serve you well. Now we need a range report!

I appreciate your observations guys. I began looking for a low cost .270 a couple of months ago. Most of the major gun makers have "value priced" models. Spent a lot of time watching videos comparing 5 such rifles like Savage, Remington -which just went bankrupt, etc. All of the evaluators universally favored the Mossberg. I could see why. The quality of the Mossberg seemed far above the others. If the price was doubled I would not consider it overpriced. No one else offered a fluted barrel and fluted bolt.

Treefarmer, The one thing I miss is having iron sites. Very few rifles now offer them. I did consider getting a synthetic stock with this model; its a bit lighter. But like you I appreciate the classic walnut and blued steel.

They are beautiful rifles and everyone praises the smooth actions of the Henrys. Finally decided on a bolt action but if I live long enough I suspect I will eventually get a Henry. (The bolt of the Mossberg is wonderfully slck, very smooth.

He has a Savage Model 99C coming in the mail, and was wondering what would be a good match of ammo. His is 308, series A.
Anybody have recent experience shooting one?

We're not sure what twist the barrel is, so it's all a guess buying ammo.

This is not mine, but a California friend's. Thought some might find it of interest. It is a S&W Performance Center .44 mag which he carries when camping of which he does a lot. It strikes me as a serious looking piece of hardware.

Wow! Nice looking S&W but it hurts just thinking about shooting 44 mags in that thing. 44 specials would be fine I’d thing, but mags? Ouch.

Pretty gun though.
