Questions - Need help with a Case knife

I have been looking through the forum and really enjoyed seeing and learning about so many great Case knives. I have questions about one I have that I have not been able to answer. I hope to use the knowledge of the forum to learn more about it.

I believe it is a peanut 3220. The tang stamp is CASE XX TESTED in an oval from 1914-1920. In my research I have not found information about a peanut before 1940 other than 1 site saying they were made. It does not have a shield. Instead it has some inlaid sparkly gold flecks.

1. Is this a genuine Case knife?
2. Am I correct in thinking it is a peanut 3220?
3. If it is genuine, what type of value does it have?

I have never seen a goldstone shield, but I'm hoping the guy who wrote the book (literally) on Case knives weighs in.

Thanks for the reply. I learned that the material is called goldstone. I tried to get some better pictures so more detail can be seen.

The pattern is indeed 3220. I have seen the goldstone shield before but it’s not very common, I suspect because both it and the handle covers are celluloid and not many have survived. My guess is the goldstone shields were used during WWI due to nickel silver scarcity (needed for the war effort). Case XX Tested in an oval is a common stamping on earlier knives from around 1915 - early 1920’s, but I’ve never seen it on a master blade before. Not saying it’s not right, just that it’s typicalLy seen on secondary blades.

Difficult to put a value on it because there won’t be comparables readily available. It’s not mint be looks to be in excellent condition. I’d say around $150 -$200, possibly more to a “Peanut” pattern collector. JMO Be interesting seeing what others think.

Thank you for the information and the welcome Mumbleypeg. I am glad to know the goldstone shield is legitimate. Because I could not find information about it I had been concerned at first.

I looked closely and there are no other markings on the secondary blade or the other side of the master blade. Thanks also for the valuation. That gives me some idea on its worth.

If I may, Steve Pfeiffer, author of "Collecting Case Knives".
He's a member here on AAPK and goes by knifeaholic.
Unfortunately trying to find a copy of the book is difficult and can be expensive.

Nice knife, and rare. In my second edition I show a 47 stockman Case Tested with yellow handles and the goldstone shield.
