But the $64,000 question - does it keep the squirrels at bay?
Anybody have any idea how prickly pear would fair in south Jersey?
Not really because it lies down flat during the cold weather when the bird feeder is being used. The spines don't seem to bother the squirrels much. I think it would grown in warm weather anywhere and probably be dormant in cold weather and bounce back in the spring. Read what this seller says;

If you want some I'll wrap it in wet newspaper and send you some.

I appreciate the offer, but if it isn't deterring the squirrels, I'll pass.

Now you'd think there'd be more than 7 inches of water in that water tank if there's a water faucet hooked up to it.dlr110 wrote: ↑Sat Jun 20, 2020 6:01 pm We had some strong thunderstorms blow through here yesterday evening and part of the night.
If you enlarge the picture you can see an arrow showing just under 5.5 inches of rain. Then
in the background another arrow shows one of our young fruit trees snapped right at the base
and it had some good looking small apples on it. There are several other trees or branches
down this morning.

My new mower is a little smaller than yours!
Also saw this hairy guy walking across my back yard the other day. I saw my dog poking at something in the grass and figured it was a copperhead, but it was only this guy. I took the dogs in the house and let the tarantula go on about his day.

In just a few days this plant grew from a few large green leaves on the ground to over 5 ft. tall. Adjacent to our mail box. Anybody know what it is? It is filling with bright yellow florets.

In the sense that the plant does not fit in with the surrounding vegetation it may certainly be called a weed. But I think such a formidable plant must have a proper name. I'll have to spend more time on Google.

Found it. It is called mullein. Originally from Turkey. The painter Monet liked to plant them in his garden. They can grow to 7 feet.

Tom, When I saw the incredible speed of its growth I too thought of Jack and the Beanstalk. From the ground to over 5 feet took only about a week. And it is still growing.

Found it QS! I have seen these before outside a factory where I used to work and a German guy told me the name but that was about 12 years ago.Quick Steel wrote: ↑Mon Jun 22, 2020 6:30 pm Tom, When I saw the incredible speed of its growth I too thought of Jack and the Beanstalk. Anyways, I looked around and I believe it's called "King's Candle".

I was just joking. In my experience what you plant, fertilize and cultivate struggles to live, but a weed propagates itself and grows, well, “like a weed”!Quick Steel wrote: ↑Mon Jun 22, 2020 6:19 pm In the sense that the plant does not fit in with the surrounding vegetation it may certainly be called a weed. Glad you found what it is. Interesting plant!

Tom that is probably a local,German, name. If you will see my earlier post, the name is mullein. I can certainly understand why it could be called King.
It turns out Kings Candle comes from the German name Mullein.
