Vikingfisher, welcome to AAPK and that's a nice collection of Schrades you have there. I use Renaissance Wax on all of my knives and have never had a problem with rust. There are other products you can use, but I've had good luck with Ren Wax.

Whats best? Well I like Rolls and every 3 months wipe them down, oil and play with them.

and cel knives stored to close to other knives. celuioid <---man my spelling is bad

Leather and all materials have some acid in them but I feel as long as their in a comfortable inviorment (a place you would never break a sweat in) and place in or on a soft material your good.

Fixed blade store them not in their sheaths.

ow I use Ren Wax also but IMO have seen it effect some ink etchings on blades just a warning.

I to wish that in one of the tabs above we could place a list of ways to preserve a knife. There are many ways.

This is what I do to my Schrades.

First I tape up (with Scotch tape) any lettering that is not stamped. Like EVER SHARP on a blade.

2nd I spray them with WD-40 mainly in where the blades rest.
Then blow that out with air from my air compressor. Whip with clean rag.

3rd I clean up handles, bolsters and back springs with FLITZ polish. Using a clean old T-shirt.

4th I take off tape from blade and with Ren-Wax and a CLEAN rag rub all parts of your Schrade and let the Ren-Wax dry. Yes even where the blades rest I use some times a Q-tip on the brass liners.

5th I use a clean rag to rub off the dried Ren-Wax.

6th I use a drop of TUF-GLIDE OIL on the JOINT ONLY.

I place them back in the wrapper and box they came in. I do not let the sheath touch the knife if one comes with it.

Place then in your safe with a Remington® Model 365 Mini-Dehumidifier

I do almost what you do but I love to look at my knive too much. Rolls give me good access to them. the boxes are stored with some dehumidfiers also

I have to think that bicycle chain lube is maybe not good. I am lucky to live in an area with very low humidity. Nothing rusts here unless one is really careless (Of course, nothing grows here either! ). I have heard, and believe, that WD-40 is very good for rust protection, and not very good for lubrication of moving parts (like bike chains). I'm sure that any national brand of gun oil would be fine. Leather probably not good. Cotton probably very good, and perhaps any fabric that has been washed a few times. Newspaper bad. Most other paper nowdays is relatively acid free. I use pistol cases with foam liners to keep some of my knives readily accessible, and a knife roll for the little ones. I like to get them out and look. WTF; If one just wants to invest for appreciation, knife collecting is NOT the way to go. I collect because they are purdy. And I have a question, also: What is bad for bone? I know that some oils soften wood and rot some threads. Does anything degrade bone knife scales??
