Inspired by my latest addition, I came up with this.


"My New EDC"

Not wanting to brag,
But you have to see,
I'm so tickled to death,
With my new EDC.

To others this may be,
Just an old knife,
To me it's a classic,
Brought back to life.

How I'd love to hear,
All the stories it could tell,
Of the places it has been,
Of the people it knew well.

To others it may be,
Just an "ol HOK",
I find her special,
Hear take a look.

With Winterbottom handles,
That turned out just right,
She conquered my heart,
Love At First Sight!

I saw Colonel26's post about him getting his "prodigal" knife back, after five years. His story and experience inspired me to write the below poem on his behalf.


WHERE DID I GO?

I slid out of his pocket as he moved about on the seat
He didn’t have a clue as I accomplished my feat
I was part of his life, because he used me each day
I would miss my companion, for here now I lay

Tucked under the seat and finally hitting the floor
Maybe I’ll fall out, as he opens the door
But alas, it’s not so, he doesn’t know I’ve been lost
He’ll fret and he’ll worry, great emotional cost

For I was a gift from his loving wife
Presented to him for his love of the knife
We were close and compatible, his EDC
I loved the feel of his hand, and he loved me

I can only imagine how he looked to and fro
Constantly wondering, “Where the heck did you go?”
I wish I could tell him, he’d be in great luck
If only he’d return and look inside the truck

But it wasn’t to be as time went on
Giving up hope, considering me gone
So I just laid around, my destiny was so
Year after year, where else could I go?

And then one day, after five years free
The father of my owner happened to see
Laying motionless right there on the floor
In that old truck, as he opened the door

Well, there you are, you old son of a gun
There’ll be smiles today, as I tell my son
He’ll be happy to see you, very pleased as well
And if you could talk, what story you’d tell

After all these years of being out of sight
I’m no longer in darkness, into the light
My master and owner, he’ll be sure to see
That I once again, become his EDC

There have been others, lost just like me
Some will be found, others never to see
Some are brand new and others are old
Some got new owners and others are sold

Some are tainted, soiled and abused
Not taken care of and terribly used
Some are still shiny, sparkly and new
Some are still mint, but those are few

Many of us lost to the wilds unknown
Buried beneath the weeds overgrown
While hunting and camping, we’re stuck in a tree
Forgotten and lost, in a sheath we should be

Many of us live in a toolbox for life
And soon do not look like a usable knife
All rusted and broken, blades tarnished and worn
No longer pretty, like from the factory when born

But many owners take great personal pride
Putting us in pockets or strapped to their side
They show us off with pride and joy
“Look what I’ve got, a brand new toy!”

So if we’re lost, we may come back one day
Or maybe we won’t, who is to say?
We may end up with somebody new
Or we might just end up back with you

Whatever the destiny may be as a knife
Five, Ten, Twenty or 100 years of our life
May our fortune be to assist you each day
In whatever endeavors may come your way

And if you ever lose us, please try to find
Our whereabouts if you truly don’t mind
For being with you is part of your life
Returning to you, your prodigal knife

Thank you, Tom, Willy & Doglegg...I'm glad you enjoyed it, and hopefully, others have to. I had fun writing it, and I hope Colonel26 isn't offended by me taking the liberty to write it based on his 'prodigal' story. It was a great reunion story of even greater odds. We've all lost a knife at some point in our lives...some found, some returned or rediscovered to our joy. We've also seen knives that have brought us sorrow and anxiety due to how it was not taken care of, or how it ended up during its lifetime. Which is why I added a few more versus to convey that. Nevertheless, each and every knife is unique and different, and every one has a story to tell, to piece the puzzle of history together.

“BOOK OF PAGES”

From the moment we enter this life crying
Our entire being begins a process of dying
A birthday each year, a celebration we’re told
From infant to adulthood and on till we’re old

But it’s not about how we count all the ages
It’s what we do by filling life’s pages
From the first day we’re born with chapter one
Whether girl or boy, daughter or son

Our pages are written each day of our life
With sadness and joy, accomplishments and strife
Notated by us inside our life’s book
Revealed to whomever we choose to look

Some chapters of life don’t make it past two
Because of their book, pages so few
Others have chapters where pages were ended
Sorrow and tragedy, many pages not mended

Some chapters are sealed within our mind
Locked inside so that no one will find
Those pages written hiding our shame
Not worthy of footnotes, glory or fame

We try to erase such terrible things
Not wanting to face the sorrow it brings
Nevertheless, these pages remain and stay
A part of us until Judgment Day

For some, many chapters are filled with pride
Happiness and joy with nothing to hide
Pages filled with kindness and sharing
Helping others, blessings and caring

Some of our chapters move place to place
Filled with our yearnings, passions and grace
A chapter may stay in a place for years
Where pages are filled with our joys and tears

Many of our chapters may be short or long
Filling our pages with music or song
Or maybe with people we’ve come to know
Acquaintances and friends we’ve allowed to grow

The contents we write within each of our books
Reflect who we are, our character of looks
Of how others see us when the cover is turned
Are they pleased to know us, or are they concerned?

Day after day with each chapter and page
Filling in the blanks as we fulfill our age
Actions and words to the chapter send
Not knowing when the last page will end

Chapters and pages that are very old
Some portions of which were copied and sold
Revealing our secrets without any shame
Desiring a legacy using our name

Prepare your thoughts for the last written play
For when that time comes on your final day
The last chapter and page of life’s last role
When the book of your life gives up the soul

And the next Book you see as the names are read
As you stand side by side with the other dead
Judgment reigns, so much human strife
May your name be written in His Book of Life

You fellers that have a way with words are amazing! I've enjoyed reading this thread from time to time. The last poem "Book of Pages" really gives us food for thought. I had no idea where the poem would eventually lead, as I was read all sort of scriptures came to mind depending on the verse but the last makes it quite clear.

To call this "Home",
This was the basis,
I've made myself,
A green oasis.

Nestled in these,
Hidden places,
Protecting from their,
Daily races.

Quiet spots,
And shady spaces,
Thank God For,
My Green Oasis!
