A Little Muskrat Love

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

That “papa muskrat” is a new one to me. I’m a big fan and a user of muskrats during venison processing time. With all those blades, you shouldn’t have to sharpen it but once a year. :)

The 4 blade knife is not a muskrat pattern. It looks like a 4 blade Stockman which is a rarely seen pattern. Muskrat pattern has 2 slender clip blades.

I hear what your saying....but. This is a pattern that is/was called a Muskrat Texas Rat. The blades are the same configuration as a large muskrat. The body seems to be the same design as the Rosewood Muskrat, just with Chestnut Bone Scales. I purchased it in 2009 at Shepard Hills. I can't remember if this was a special release, but besides Tex Muskrat stamped on the blade it also had "Tested XX" stamped on the other.

Well, o.k.
I like to use the pattern names as defined by Bernard Levine because it gives us some standardization. For at least the past 100 years knife companies have been 'bending' the pattern names for marketing purposes and this has created some confusion. Case is well known for unique names like "Peanut", Sod Buster", "Half Whittler" and now "Texas Rat".

True. That is one reason I had purchased it. I had never heard of a Texas Rat, cutlery wise. But I have seen a few live ones though, mainly around Ft. Hood. ::woot::
