Case Tested 6299 question

I bought this at a local computer bid auction for 7 dollars. It was dirty, had two chipped blades, a few cracks in the front scale and a piece fastened into the back scale. It took about an hours worth of minor cleaning to get some of the grime off and some touching up of the blades to get rid of the chips. The blade looks like an A blade according to Steve Pfeiffer's book and the shield is an early Case XX (tall S) which according to Witcher's Counterfeiting book was used some when the new open C shields were being introduced. I'm guessing the knife is OK even with the red flags I've mentioned. The blade pivot pin shows a little on the front bolster, but not on the back and does not appear to have been replaced. The blades match the springs perfectly and the wear on the bone looks consistent with the age and wear on the knife. What do you guys think? Do I have a nice old somewhat beat up workhorse or did I waste 7 dollars and an hours labor. I posted before and after cleaning pictures. ____Dave

Bid swoop on that clip. Good looking knife. Intrested to hear from the case guys but my impression is that an A blade.

Knife looks fine to me as far as being authentic. The “open C, tall S” shield appeared in the late Tested era. I can’t comment on the A blade.

I checked Sargent's book on Knives and Razors, pg.245 and he shows a 6299 Tested with the same shield and identical stamping. Mine is a 6299 1/2 because it has a clip blade. That eases my mine a little. ____Dave

Dave, I like that one! You made her look like a new one, well almost, she looks like a different one. That is a very satisfying project, to bring one back to life and you did a great job.

Dave, that's a very nice knife and is one of my favorite Case patterns. $7 well spent! And you did a great job of getting those nicks out of the blades.

I often wonder how knife blades end up with those flea bites? That pen blade almost looked serrated. Great rehab!

Nice job on the cleaning. Most definitely an A blade. This knife has 3 variations in tested era. Spear blade which is a 6299 and the A blade which is what you have(big clip) 6299 1/2. It was also offered with a sheep’s foot blade and a can opener which would be a 6299shr.

Sliding it under the edge of something and trying to pry it will do it almost every time. Chopping can do that also.

Knife is a good one and yes it is an A blade. All Tested 99 1/2 patterns had the A blade. The other style blade does not show up til the later XX era.

At $7...it's kinda like buying a scratch-off ticket. It would have been worth $7, for the entertainment...but you scored pretty well on that one!!!
