Fake or real tested 6488
Fake or real tested 6488
I was at an auction back in December where I’m 99.9 % sure this knife sold at. I know this because the guy that bought it had some very unique items for sale on eBay that came from the same auction. The auction house listed it as a very good reproduction. I checked out the knife and I just didn’t trust it if you know what I mean. It looked to good to be true. I guess what I’m wanting to know did I pass on a real or fake knife? I was browsing the ended auctions on eBay and came across the listing. Thanks

I would prefer the knife have a tested shield instead of the XX shield but the knife looks authentic to me.

A favorite and lucrative knife to fake, especially if done well. This type of knife can be scary at the prices the real ones can bring so it deserves a lot of scrutiny and opinions. As Tom said a Tested shield would look better. Can't say I especially like the color or the jigging of the bone but could just be the camera and lighting. Stamp on the sheeps foot blade left quite an impression/depression in the tang. Too scary for me.
The seller is predominantly a fixed blade seller but it looks like he's getting more into pocket knives. I believe he sells under at least 2 possibly 3 different names.

If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.

Wayne makes a good point about the color and jigging. Would really need that knife in hand to tell for sure. I sure do believe that they are authentic tested stamps.

Thanks for the input. The things that threw me off of it. The one stamp, the shield, the nail nick on one of the smaller blades, and one of the tang thickness compared to the back spring. It honestly looked like a newer case knife with the blades changed. It sold for $175.00 probably should have bid on it, but I don’t have that kind of money to spend on a possible fake knife. Thanks again

That knife has a lot of possibilities.
I agree with what others have said about its questionable areas. If I spent that much for a knife I’d want to be rock solid that it’s the real deal, not have to defend its authenticity after I bought it.
At $175 we could talk. At $10,000 currently being asked, I’m not a player in any case, authentic or not.

Re: Fake or real tested 6488
Going back and taking a closer look at all of the eBay auction pictures I seriously doubt the knife is authentic. Doesn't have the look of a Tested era green bone IMO along with the above mentioned questionable issues. I think it is a more modern Case frame and handles with modern re-stamped blades. Case has done a number of reproduction 6488 pattern knives with long pull master blades.
The knife actually sold on eBay for over $4350, how much over that I'm not sure but less than $7500. I guess someone was confident enough to bid real money. It could boomerang lot so many other knives and end up back on eBay. The knife had a 30 day return privilege.

Knives like this are why I'll continue to splash around in the shallow end of the pool.

Lots of guys won't buy any Case because they fear they are all fakes. Most are not I have owned a few nice 88's never any thing older than XX-USA transition. I would never not buy a certain maker, but would be very careful on the Tested 88's. I have seen some that had been put together.

If this happens to be a counterfeit, id say this is the story..
Looks like a 40-64 bone congress frame replaced with authentic LP blades from the tested era.
Still, i cant say confident without handling.

Re: Fake or real tested 6488
possibly a transition period?
instead of thinking Tested 88 LP.
think xx 88LP w/Tested blades, many say tested blades were used past 1940, id agree...
