In August last year our very own Ken and Roger released their first Maher & Grosh knives. Both have the nail nick and the long pull. Big knives require busy fingers.

Seems to me supratentorial is right about the fulcrum. The further back the pull, the more difficult to open.
Old Folder's double pulls may include the forward nick for ease of opening because using the long pull is just more difficult on the nail and maybe not there for opening at all and just a fuller.
In any case, a long pull is best used as forward as possible, again for ease of opening, and nobody's nail is as long as a long pull :) .
Therefore I think long pulls are for a reason other than just opening, whether as a fuller, or any of the other reasons given in other posts.
I'm a right hander but multi-blade knives have some blades with nicks on the other side, so I'm in solidarity with the lefties here. ::tu:: (notice it's a leftie thumbs up)
Sorry if I sound like a know-it-all. I'm quite the opposite, it's just my irritating manner left over from my teacher days. ::shrug::

I have not idea as to the reasons for them, however, I really like the double pulls on the old elephant toenails. Also on the new Maher and Grosh knives.

I do not understand why a Cutler would do such a thing except for the Maybe that the long pull was a "style" feature in days gone by.

I LOVE long pull blades, and I prefer "match strikes" but there seems to be no conscientious (Did spell check screw me?) on why. Things seem to be the way they are because they are the way they are.
That un-nerves me.

One of my cats said that last bit. Really! ::skeptic::

105 posts? I'm done for now.
In reference to your liking "match strike" pulls, this Paxton & Gallagher harness jack has a regular pull on the main blade, and a match strike pull on the awl. Kind of unusual, I wonder what the thinking was on that design?

I can easily see the "matchstrike" pull being used as just that. A matchstrike.
Being that your awl in in the main blade position (front) I also see the utility in that pull. It just makes sense to me. ::nod::

There has to be a reason for the name. ::shrug::

Hey my friend that high pull with the incredible colored bone looks familiar. What a great knife.

XX Case XX wrote:I'm curious as to what determines if a knife contains a nail knick or a long pull. I'm looking at knives for sale here, and knives on eBay as well as my own, and I cannot find any rhyme or reason as to who gets what. Here's a few examples of both.

Can anyone here shed some light on this?

I thought this old thread may be a good place to ask a question similar to the original post. Why would this Hibbard, Spencer & Bartlett cattle knife (made by NY Knife) have three blades, each with a different pull? The master blade has a match strike, the sheepsfoot has a nail nick, and the skinner has a long pull. Maybe the answer is "because it could"?

Here's a double pull on a small knife, a whittler with what I l believe are ivory handles. This one is only 3 1/8" inches in length.

Ok fellas, how about this?!
My Buck 424 has neither! It’s just got a fairly pronounced flare at the top of the spine. It opens very easily with either hand. Yep, I tried it.
I wonder if the ease of opening has something to do with it having a lock? Anyway, good thing it’s like this because it lives in my little emergency bag in my backpack. If I’m using it, it’s probably because the Big One finally nailed us. Being able to open it easily with either hand might be kinda crucial!

Some people refer to that as a "pinch opener".
