Sodbuster w/ linerlock

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

Sodbuster w/ linerlock

Post by Sharpnshinyknives »

Last year I sold almost all the knives from a 400 piece collection that I bought. In that collection were 4 Case Sodbusters, all in mint condition. I sold 3 of them and got between 25 and 35 dollars. However when I found a Sodbuster w/ a liner lock, I put it out for 25 start and 50 buy it now. W/in minutes it sold for 50 dollars. Left me wondering ever since if I made a mistake. I like Sodbusters but don’t like how easily they fold so a linerlock was very appealing. I wonder why they didn’t make more w/ a linerlock?
But my big question is this, how rare was that knife? I have never seen another one for sale anywhere. And I haven’t found any information.
I don’t remember the year of the knife, it had dots and I’m thinking it was a 70’s or early 80’s knife. I deleted all the photos so that’s no help.
This has been bugging me ever since it sold.
Any Case experts know the answer?
Thanks,
SSk

Made them one year (78 or 79) will have to dig mine out to tell what year, usually get about $125.00 for that one I had a buddy that would buy them site unseen for 95 no question ask he used to say.

Well that explains why it went so fast. I should have done my research before I let it go. I can’t figure out why Case didn’t make more or still make them this way. That would make that knife a lot more useful.
Thanks Gary,

Not exactly accurate. They were made from 1970-85. I have a mint condition 1970 ten dot LSS as they were called that I paid $165 for. ::nod::

Okay now I am kicking myself black and blue. I might have been better off not asking. If someone comes along and tells me they bought one for 50 bucks from some guy who didn’t know what he had and sold it for 500, well I might punch myself into a coma.

Mark the 1970 ten dot is of course the jewel of that batch. I have several others from 1970 to 1980 in slightly used condition that I paid much less for. I love the linerlocj on them. I even have a 1970 ten dot that I had rehandled in orange camel bone. :D

Thanks Mark! I carry that one a lot. Big hefty blade with a linerlock, man there's nothing that knife won't do. ::tu::

Greg, I bet that’s right. After I sold that one, I regretted not keeping it to use. I wish I had had one of those on the farm when I was younger.
The price on that one on eBay is 135. Sheesh!

If you keep an eye out you can find a used one with the linerlock for$40-$50 sometimes. I don't understand why they quit making them. Great knives.

And if you really want a Sodbuster with the linerlock, RR has one for $10 (SMKW price), plus a couple bucks if you buy it elsewhere. Mine cost $12 from a local store. Really solid knife. This is the one I have, but it looks like they've discontinued the Coal Miner version.

Case introduced the 2138 L SS with liner lock in 1970...the 10 dot examples are hard to find. It was discontinued in 1985, was in production every year from 1970-85.

Value of these has gone up and down. The early 70's examples are scarce and may bring $125 in mint condition.

A rare variation is the 5 dot 1975 with Pakkawood handles made for the ALYESKA pipeline company. P138 L SS, 500 made.

Steve, Since they made this for so many years, then why are they so hard to find? 15 years of production would be a whole lot of knives. You would think eBay would be flooded w/ them in all different conditions, but they aren’t.
