Schrade 298?

Schrade Cutlery Company was founded in 1904 by George Schrade, and his brothers Jacob and William Schrade. In 1946 Imperial Knife Associated Companies, (IKAC; an association of Ulster Knife Co and Imperial Knife Co) purchased controlling interest in Schrade Cut Co and changed the name to Schrade Walden Cutlery. In 1973 the name was changed to Schrade Cutlery. In 2004 Schrade closed due to bankruptcy.

This forum is dedicated to the knives that are the legacy of this company. This forum is not the place to discuss the replica knives currently being imported using the Schrade name.

Schrade 298?

Post by jxr1197 »

This Schrade Walden 298 (3-9/16") is not found in any catalogs or price lists available online. The bone handles and tang stamp make me think late 50's was when it was made but that's all I got. The pocket blade is snapped and was re-shaped into a coping blade but I'm guessing it started out as a turkish clip. Does anyone have one of these or know anything about the pattern? It's in terrible shape but I picked it up for $6 just to find out what it was!

298 in 1961 only about 1200 made
It was on the inventory in 60 and 62 with no production numbers

Larry has put together what is probably the greatest collection of information and documents related to Schrade in existence.
You can find the online portion of his collection at: http://collectors-of-schrades-r.us/

Larry and I have shared catalogs for years, probably at close to 12 years now. In addition to his own enormous collection of documents, he generously shares them with other people and they in turn share their documents with him. Larry's website is probably the greatest resource to Schrade and now Camillus collectors. And it keeps growing with peripheral brands to Schrade, Imperial, Ulster and Camillus. Also Western.
If Larry Vickery says something about Schrade, you can pretty much put it in the bank.

Besides all that heall is a nice guy too. ::nod::

Dale,
You make me blush with all those fine words. We have worked together with many of the fine collectors of Schrade and the family of knives for at least those 12 years, putting a huge amount of info out there on the web for all to see. I’ve been collecting the catalogs since before the factory closing.
I've been fortunate to have been allowed to scan and display much of the info on the web site.
Freely shared with all.
The info on the 298 is from the Schrade production logs which were part of one the collections. Sorry I do not have any pictures of the knife. I'll keep an eye out for it.
Dale, Dennis, LT, Hal and Glenn are just a few of the folks on here that have contributed.
Many others over on Bladeforum as well.
I was lucky to get to know Tom from Camillus, Dave from Schrade both willing to share their years of experience and knowledge with us.
I thank them all for sharing.
I have much yet to put on my site and am looking forward to doing so soon.
Thanks
Larry

Dale, thank you for that information. I was not aware Larry had such a hand in schrade collecting and the essential information and catalogs that we all use. It is certainly most appreciated that you folks put in the work for everyone to benefit. I cant stress how much I have learned just from the schrade catalogs alone.

My first effort at posting here at AAPK. I have had this knife for several years, and had not been able to find any information on this particular model until I ran across this old thread. My knife has really nice bone handles. I suspected it may be a rare model or a special production model made for some small distributor. Looks as if there were only 1200 of them made in 1961. I hope this helps to confirm the model number and the physical attributes to this particular knife. I like it. . .

I don't remember where I found these pictures, But I seem to remember that the guys who own these knives believed that the scales on them came from the factory when new. I've never seen or heard any information about the 298 until now. Are these un-altered, factory fresh knives?

Edit;
LOL!
I never noticed before, but that is the same knife in all four pictures. So I'm not thinking this is a factory knife so much. LOL!

It's nice to see a couple other examples of the knife, and the timing couldn't be better. After a few years I decided to do something with this knife and while it's no longer a legit 298, it's a representation of what it once looked like and has been promoted from a junk-knife-box dweller all the way up to a display shelf knife. This mod was only done a month ago. Thanks for sharing pics of other 298s!

I took it upon myself to tweak your pictures so we can see your awesome 298 better. It is the best one I've ever seen. Thanks for posting it.
