Re: Case 1970
I've often wondered that myself. It's the first year that Case started using the Dotted dating system but I can't imagine that that is the reason.

Re: Case 1970
That is exactly the reason. 1970 ushered in the dot system for dating knives. Actually pretty revolutionary in the knife world.

Re: Case 1970
Dating makes perfect sense for something like a knife that is created with one foot already in the collector world. It's amazing to me that there was a time when any mfr would have NOT put the date on their product (any product). I'm pretty sure there's some message in this about the difference between how we used to view the products we buy and how we view them today. Maybe we are a more litigious society, so there has to be a paper trail for the lawyers? Or maybe in our mass-produced, disposable world, we need better tracking for quality issues and recalls?

Knives used to be simply tools for everyday use, similar to a hammer or a pair of pliers. As long as a knife did the job, held it’s edge, I can’t imagine Grandpa caring what year his knife was made. Now we see them in a totally different light, even if we still use them as a tool.
My two cents worth.
