Re: Pictures of Miscellaneous Stuff & Things
Nice pic, Roger.
Joe mentioned my Kennedy tool box and riser the other day. As I continue to get my workbench sorted out, here's a couple more.
My mom took me down to Bill Williams tools in Fort Worth in 1980, after I graduated HS, and just before I went off to college. She bought me the red Kennedy tool box and a few tools, and my Dad gave me some tools that he had two of. It rode behind the seat of my pickup for many years.
The brown one next to it was my Dad's. We used it on many projects throughout the 60s and 70s. Mom gave it to me after he passed away.
The smaller machinist chest (model 520) I rescued it after a neighbor threw it on his garbage pile a few years ago. Someone had spilled something all in it (Linseed oil?) and also jimmied the lock and bent it up, and it was missing the front drawer cover. I cleaned it up, ordered new felt, a new lock, and a new front cover from Kennedy. I gave it my son. Now that he has moved out on his own, I guess I need to fill it up with tools and take it to him.
Also pictured is a new Tipton gun butler. I've been wanting something to hold my rifles while I clean them, to make the job a little easier. We'll see how this does.

Unk, that is a beautiful restoration of the discarded chest. Looks like it would make an excellent knife case.

Unk, your workbench looks way too organized. You're obviously a very sick person!

mrwatch, I think your work is really, really, superb. Spectacular. Could you explain what is "wood burning?"

Thanks, those were from long ago. Wood burning or pyrography is using a rheostat controlled heated tip to burn into the wood or do shading like the donkey. Mine is a Detail Master. The birds were not supposed to be blue. I used carbon paper instead of tracing paper.

I was born to mess. Need to fire up the leaf blower and dust off the bench!

MRW we were blessed with the same gene's as far as being messy. (obviously not as being artistic) Have always been messy. I could feel at home at your work bench.

Come nightfall this lil' feller will be singin' in the trees. I've seen several empty shells over the past few days, so it's probably gonna get pretty noisy 'round here. Like the whippoorwills, I enjoy them for the first couple of nights, after that, they get a little annoying. Ah, the sounds of summer.

My mom thinks this 3-legged homemade stool is a milking stool.....I bet she's right!
I also nabbed this hunk of railroad track at the same estate sale last week.

Could well be a milking stool. I would think one would be a little lighter so you could move it around. Then again you use what you have and that would work. It is sharp looking. And the rail makes a great little anvil. I have one just a little shorter.

Not sure that's rail iron, I think it's a chunk of I-beam. Still make a decent anvil though.

Re: Pictures of Miscellaneous Stuff & Things
Scott, Having had a few years experience milking cows as a kid at home and then keeping a milk cow for several years when our kids were young, I'd say that is not a milking stool. Now it could very well have been a milking stool for some folks but for me the seat is way to thick and heavy to easily and quickly move when necessary. The tales I could tell about milking cows! We loved the milk and butter but I was glad when some one bought our last milk cow!

I know I posted this yesterday but must have not mashed the go-gitty-button.
This is what I remember most of the milk stools looking similar to when I was growing up.

Jerry, I've seen a few of those but was never talented enough to use one. They used to sell one legged stools that had a seat and a harness to keep it in place, so all you had to do was sit down, one of them "Look Ma, no hands!" deals.
The 3 legged stool always sits balanced where a 4 leg might rock a little bit especially on a hard surface.
All that seems so long ago.

Jerry, it seems like you would spend a lot of time rinsing that one off.

Rinsing it off?? Why would you rinse it off. The milk goes in the bucket, not on the stool.FRJ wrote:Jerry, it seems like you would spend a lot of time rinsing that one off.

That's right, Jerry, the milk goes in the bucket.
I'm thinking of the hazards of cow crap that may be in the area.
The usefulness of that one escapes me but I'm not the most experienced cow milker around.
I did work on a dairy and hand milked cows.
A three legged stool will set.
