Found me a Doctor.... Why all the letters?

Hello everyone....

I found me this pretty little doctor. It's on the way but while looking at the sellers pics I see the tang stamp says SR6185 SSP...
What does the "SR" in front of the number mean?
I have looked all around and I have found tang stamps that say just "6185 SSP"... so I am confused a little about the extra letters.

It's a purdy red 'un.

Looks like the year is 1980 from the other tang stamp.

I believe the SR stands for Smooth Red. The bone often does not take up

the dye as smoothly as yours.

I have a SR6244.

I think that you are talking about the knives that Case put out in 1979-1982 with "Satin Rose" bone handles (that was Case's name for the handle). These used the prefix "SR".

This was a topic here on AAPK in 2010 and here was Knifeaholics response above.
But in his new book I think he may have changed it to “smooth rose”. So I guess either one is right.

Satin Rose is correct based on my knowledge.

I based my information from the knifedb.com web site but it looks like satin rose is

described in Steve Pfeiffer's Collecting Case Knives.

The AAPK store members usually mentions smooth red.

Maybe W.R.Case meant it to mean Satin Rose and the knife collecting public wants it to mean

smooth red. Who knows? I wish the W.R. Case web site was more thorough.

The Satin Rose describes the beautiful handle material best.

You can see from the attached 1980 new product sheet, that Case did refer to it as "smooth rose"...not "smooth red".
