Error on box ?

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

Error on box ?

Post by jtb »

I picked up a 1991 stag Mini Copperhead marked 52109X on the blade. The label on box also has 52109X, but says "Copperlock". The knife is a Mini Copperhead. Has anyone heard of labels having the correct number but the wrong name?

I've never seen it but it wouldn't surprise me. Errors happen. I can see how it would be easy for a production operator to be changing the computer set up for printing labels and miss changing the knife description. Copperlock and Copperhead are similar enough to be easily missed. In 1991 most knife buyers were probably throwing the boxes in the trash and putting the knife in their pocket, without ever reading the box label!

Interestingly though the first Copperlock run was not until 1996’, 5 years later.

::hmm:: That is interesting! How about posting a picture of the box label jtb? Was it printed or handwritten? Does it have a Barcode? I've forgotten what those 1991 box labels looked like. ::dang::

Can we see the rest of the label (the bottom part)? IIRC there should be a date of manufacture on it. Also the tang stamp on the knife. If Jerry is right in that the first Copperlock was made in 1996, but your knife has a 1991 date stamp, you have a real curiosity there. ::hmm:: Even aside from the label discrepancy between the pattern number and the description.

I was wrong about the date. I was shooting from memory on the first post. It’s 2000. I couldn’t get a legible photo of the knife due to flash and the indoor lighting, but here’s the bottom of the label

I guess we're back to square one - operator error when creating the box label. I'm guessing the previous run of labels was for Copperlocks. The next run was Copperheads. When the operator changed the label template they missed changing "Copperlock" to "Copperhead" and no one caught the error.

The box is labeled 11/06/2000. If the knife is dated 1991 the box was not original to the knife.

The knife is 2000, the 1996 was a mistake in my memory
