Old case?

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

The handles on these knives were originally coated or sealed with a shellac or varnish. Sadly oiling will not return that original look. Your knife was made in late 1930s and again in the late 1940s by the mark. Civilian hunting knives were not made with aluminum pommels during the war since aluminum was considered a "strategic" material. Case hunters of that era were mostly chrome plated and sadly your knife has a lot of scratches in the chrome for which there is no good cure. If the chrome is buffed off it will not have an original look since the cro-van steel it is made from will not have the same color when buffed as the original chrome finish. Did you get a sheath with it? Proper sheaths also help narrowing down dates.

Sorry for the delay. Your sheath looks newer style than the knife so it doesn't help narrow down the dating of the knife. Many hunting knives are found in sheaths provided after the original wore or rotted away.

Your knife looks like a 5325-5 Stag with the small blood groove / fuller best I can tell,
maybe blade 1/2" short from sharpening, OAL should be 9 1/4" if it was full

Oil won't return the original look but will prevent further cracking/shrinking
