Steve they feel surprisingly good both to hold and shoot. My wife with multiple health problems shoots one with no problem, as do my boys and our neighbors’ kids. That birdshead grip makes all the difference. The recoil is more like a rocking motion.

Neither of the loads I tested were bad at all. But neither of them were barn burner loads either. The #4 shot was 1255 fps and the buck was 2 3/4 low recoil loads from federal. Both were very enjoyable. I will say this though, if you’d shoot one, make sure to use the hand strap on the forearm. With a barrel that short you don’t want your hand accidentally slipping off and getting in front of the barrel.

I've been sporadically working on this one since 08.

I've built it from parts and a lot of improvised jigs and tooling. Not quite finished, but it is headspaced. Just need to put in a few pins and cold blue the barrel and It'll be ready to test fire.

Saturday afternoon my youngest son and I made the journey into Big D to see the NRA convention exhibit hall. Wow! Over 800 exhibitors in nearly 20 acres under one roof. We were there nearly 4 hours and I estimate we saw about 2/3 of it.

Lots of firearms and related gear of course - I'd guess Remington, Sig, and S&W had the largest and most extensive displays but Glock, Browning, Winchester, FN, Springfield, Henry and some others were impressive also. Hundreds of smaller specialty manufacturers like Uberti, and a lot I hadn't heard of before.

Knife makers were there too - Buck, Case, Boker and MicroTech had larger tha average booths.

The place was packed but everyone was having a great time. Never saw any protesters anywhere. Despite what you may have seen or heard.

On the news up here they showed about 100 or so people said to be demonstrators hanging around somewhere near the convention hall. Didn't look very exciting. Typical network BS coverage of a nothing event.

It is my first. I figure eventually rifles like this may be banned, so I jumped on it.

Took the AK to the range Sunday. It's going to need optics, but otherwise, it's a darn fun rifle.

My Bulgarian SKS was a fun and pretty accurate shooter. Like most of my guns it's in somebody else's possession.

Looks like you have a milled receiver on it, those usually run a little more money. Those guns aren't tack drivers but a scope sure won't hurt any. Nice score!

Good eye. It is a milled reciever and I did pay a nice premium for it. Lots of inexpensive AKs out there that do what they're designed to do, but I wanted a better quality rifle that I could justify sinking the money into a few upgrades. It'll be a fun and accurate plinker, which is all I'm really wanting. I'm not into tactical rifles so this will be my only one.

Ray that's a fine looking revolver you have. I'd say it would be a lot of fun to shoot.

Ray you have a good one there. I have one I use for bulls eye and silhouette. I put an ultradot on it and it is a great revolver. No jams, will eat any brand. My favorite.

Ray that revolver is a beauty. I bet it’s a hoot to shoot.

I’ve been looking at an AK47 for another distance shooting Rifle, but everyone says not good for distance shooting.
How does your gun shoot and how far are you shooting it?

I have a Colt Match Target HBAR that is my current distance shooting gun.

Have you considered the Springfield Armory M1A in 6.5 Creedmoor? I don't own one and have not shot one, but am interested to hear from folks that have evaluated it.

The AK gets a lot of hate, but the simple truth is, it's widely used for a reason. It is accurate for distance. I can group at 50y and 100y with iron sites, and any decent AK is accurate at 300y with optics. However, if distance is your game, there are better rifles for less money. A good AK will run you about $1,200. I like milsurp bolt action rifles for distance which run $300-$500 for a good .303 or 8mm Mauser and upwards from there. The modern rifles I don't know much about and I like to speak from personal experience. I see a lot of guys using the M4 off an AR platform, but they all shoot at 50y it seems. Bottom line, you'll probably have to try a few different rifles to find your fit.
