Old celluloid

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

Old celluloid

Post by rwb1786 »

Would these be classified as smooth yellow. The 32048 is a 1905-20 I recently picked up and is very green ish. I'm not very familiar with old celluloid

The small one looks like cracked ice.

I'm not familiar with that. I had thought this was a 32029 from 1920-40

I think cracked ice was designated with a 9 as the first number. I assume neither of them are marked with a pattern number? Not unusual. There was also a cream or white composition that was designated by a 4. That could be what is on your 048. The yellow and the cream were both bad to shrink and discolor.

The 32048 is smooth yellow cell. I suspect over the years it has discolored, although I don't know if turning green is a sign of gassing. Do you see any corrosion on the liners or bolsters?

I agree with the others that the little jack is cracked ice, or "imitation pearl" as Case calls the more recent versions. It's mother of toilet seat, but nice MoTS.

Thanks very much. I believe you are right that that is a 92029. I'm not sure about the 48 pattern though. Would seem to be too green for smooth white. Sure isn't very pretty either way.

I don't see the type of gassing that I'm reading about. Like I said I've not seen any celluloid this old so maybe it's normal fading. I do appreciate all the replies and opinions

Should have clarified that the handles on the 48 are waterfall celluloid making it a B2048
