We've been been to the crater on a previous trip to Maui, in fact many (MANY) years ago my wife did the bike ride down the mountain. Our daughter has not been up there so we might go see it again this time.

I just spent the last hour with a very nice young lady that had a grip-strength just short of the she-hulk who gave me a "lomi lomi" massage. And no, boys, it was NOT *that* kind of massage, it was all on the up & up, in fact, my wife and daughter were in the adjoining rooms enjoying the ministrations of their own she-hulks.

If you have never had a proper massage, I highly recommend it, just don't plan on being good for anything immediately afterwards!

So what are you telling me Suitcase? Hawaii is your vacation destination of choice? Unfortunately, for us, I can spend a week at an All-Inclusive in the Caribbean (or Mexico) for the price of a round trip plane ticket to Hawaii.

TFL, when we were on Maui we ate the famous Mama's Fish House in Paia. It was very good but crowded and also pricey. We were staying at a B&B and mentioned to the manager where we had eaten and had enjoyed it. He said we should try the restaurant at the Heili'ameili General Store. If we didn't think it is better than Mama's he would pay for our dinner. We went there for dinner the next night. He didn't have to pay!

I don't take big vacations very often. Two 1-week trips in the last 6 months is very unusual - before that the previous vacation was 4 days in New York 3 years ago.

Caribbean vs Hawaii is an East vs West thing. Flying to Hawaii from California is pretty easy - 5.5 hours direct from LA. It takes me 3 hours to go from LA to Dallas and 5 hours for LA to Miami. To get to the Bahamas (the closest Caribbean island), it takes over 7 hours with 1 layover stop. I happen to love the Caribbean too - I've been to several of the islands. However, the distance and the hurricanes are a big problem for me. The big storms happen in Hawaii as well, but not nearly as frequently as in the Gulf.

Mexico is just not favorite destination - not even the places that are a bit closer than Hawaii, like the resorts in Cancun (4.5 hrs away), Puerto Vallarta (3 hrs away) or Cabo San Lucas (2.5 hrs away). I would rather drive to San Diego than go to Mexico - but that's just me...

Ken - yes, I understand. I know where Paia is on the island. I just meant that we might go up the mountain on this trip. I don't think we'll get over to Paia this time. I learned a long time ago not to try to do everything in 1 week. We'll be back here in a couple of years!

We tried to get dinner reservations for Merriman's in Kapalua, but we called too late and they haven't got a time/day that works for us. We might try to drop-in and see if we can get a table in the bar.

I've never been on vacation. Of course, that's based on my definition of "vacation."

First - going someplace where I am not obligated to visit anyone. "Don't forget, we have to make time to see Aunt so-and-so along the way."

2 - not overly concerned about how much I'm spending. A budget, yes, but a very healthy budget.

We make sure to get up to see my folks every year. They're up along the coast of Maine, 'bout an hour plus from Bar Harbor up Route 1, if you're familiar with the area. Love it. Always have a great time. Sure saves on hotels and eating out.

One of these days my wife and I would like to take an Alaskan cruise. *sigh* Some day.

Gene Autry was indeed born in Tioga. Supposedly soon after he became a movie star, to capitalize on his fame someone started a petition to change the town's name to "Autry". However one of the town's most prominent and respected citizens was the doctor who had delivered Gene at birth. Seems the family never paid him for his services. The doctor reportedly objected strongly to the proposed name change, and explained his reasons why. And that was the end of that.

I'm not sure how much truth there is to that story, but that's the way it's told around here. Today a street in the town (there aren't many) is named Gene Autry Drive.

The Gene Autry Musuem is in Los Angeles. It's a very interesting museum, a mix of real Old West & Native American artifacts, Western art and TV & movie Western memorabilia. The Colt firearms exhibit is very, very cool. However, over the years it has also become more "politically correct" with many of the exhibits, which I think takes away from the original intent of the museum.

The two pictured Post Cards below are from "Corriganville" Ca. during the early 1960s. My Father was a big Western movie fan, so we went there often.

Corriganville Movie Ranch was a working film studio and movie ranch for outdoor location shooting, as well as a Western-themed tourist attraction. The ranch, owned by actor and stuntman Ray "Crash" Corrigan (pictured below), is located in the foothills of the Santa Susana Mountains in the Santa Susana Pass area of Simi Valley in eastern Ventura County, California. The site is currently a public park in the City of Simi Valley, called Corriganville Park, and operated by Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District.
The interpretive trail has historical markers, photographs and descriptions of filming locations, really tells the tale of the TV and film Westerns in their hey-day: Fort Apache, Buffalo Bill in Tomahawk Territory, The Robe, The Lone Ranger, The Adventures of Rin Tin Tin, Sky King, Circus Boy, and Star Trek were all filmed here. What now remains of movie and theme park buildings are various concrete and rock foundations. Most visitors now come for the many hiking trails that provide views from dramatic rock formations that made the park a popular filming location from 1930s to 1960s. The park and the entire Santa Susana Pass area has many sites and vistas seen in movies and especially 1950s television westerns.

High power line transformer. Lot of copper there. That's where most of the value comes from.

I'm guessing either very large transformers or the electric motors from a diesel-electric locomotive?

I'm surprised they aren't worth more than $200K - that's a A LOT of copper...

Everyone is correct. That's the guts of a Georgia Power substation transformer that has blown beyond repair. About 61,000 pounds of pure copper in there.

Reminds me of years ago when I made a sales call at G.E.'s locomotive engine plant in Erie, PA. The day I arrived everyone was talking about an incident that had just occurred. Seems there was an ongoing labor dispute. Someone - supposedly a union sympathizer - had spray painted "scrap" on the sides of a brand new locomotive engine sitting in the factory yard, and it had been cut up into pieces. The hugely costly "mistake" was discovered just prior to my arrival there, and all was in an uproar.
