Zippo advertising knife Camel

Post by terryl308 »

Do these things have any value? It is a stainless Zippo lock back in a leather pouch. The pouch has Made In USA on the back and a camel on the front with some lettering underneath that I can't make out. the knife blade is about 2 1/4"long with Zippo USA, Bradford, Pa. stamped on the tang. The opposite side has "Stainless" on it. The all metal covers have the word Camel and a scene with a camel and trees and etc. and 1994 RJRTC. Not my knife just checking for a friend, thanks for looking, ::handshake:: Terry

Looks like a Joe Camel promotional item. The RJRTC stands for R.J.Reynolds Tobacco Co. Their nice little knives but I don't think their collector value is all that high unless you collect Joe Camel stuff. I have a few of them including a couple with sheaths. They make a nice pocket knife.

K7, thanks for the response, that's kind of what I thought, but glad to hear it from the pros'. I did find one that sold on ebay for $13. Thanks again, ::tu:: Terry

Zippo made the knife in the USA. I have the same one from 1988 in a plain finish; they were popular for engraving. Mine is nicely made, but I have never carried it - sits on a shelf with my military career collectibles. OH

I think that with more people giving up smoking tobacco items will be more sought after? I had a antique mall booth and sold tobacco pipes, cigar cutters, and unusual or nice advertising ash trays. As I recall the packs of cigarettes had cards in plastic wrapper to send in for them. As for as Camels I liked the Camel paper gun targets a the gun shows for Desert Storm. That said "I'd travel 10,000 miles to smoke a camel!" And my wife has ridden one. :D

Thanks MR and OH, I returned it to the owner this morning. His relative gave him 3 knives and the Camel Zippo was one of them. I told him I would do a little searching and see what I could come up with. He told me she had several pocket knives that she is trying to dispose of and I told him to let me look at them, so we will see what this leads up to. That's how I get a lot of "collectables", usually they are china made junk but you never know till you look, right? Have a nice day! ::handshake:: Terry

Is it safe to assume that Case made this knife?

Here are a few of them. In all likelihood made by Case.

I was always under the impression that these style knives, whether marked Case or Zippo, were built by Alcas/Cutco. Not sure, but I think I've read it somewhere, maybe even here on AAPK. Some years back they were doing quite well in the collector market, or it seemed they had somewhat of a following, regardless of their particular advertising.

Here's my favorite, it's one my brother got for successfully completing tech training for the Scada Satellite program.

Same with these, I always thought Alcas/Cutco made them for Zippo.

Please correct me if I'm wrong,
