new/old Schrade-Walden Question

Post by testcase »

With Schrade having gone out of business then bought by Taylor to be made in China, is this Made in the USA knife New Old Stock or is it assembled from left over parts?
It seems nicely finished and came in the clear tube like the old Schrades did with the correct paperwork.

Here is the unhappy facts about your knife:
It was made in the USA, under contract by the person and/or corporation that now owns the Schrade name. It is a real Schrade, by that definition. It was most likely made in New York State. But not in the town of Walden.
The pattern is a 293Y, but it is not an original, pre-July, 2004 Schrade made in the town of Ellenville. Yes, the clear packaging is probably original, but was found in the old Schrade factory in Ellenville. The insert is close to the originals, but not real close.

Clues: Postion of the clip blade nail nick. The 'Everlastingly Sharp' etch.
The middle, backspring pivot pin which is neatly ground flush to the handle.

BR Levine likes to say "read the knife, not the markings". This knife is a classic example of why one should do that.

Street price on the knife you show us is about $30-40. On ebay it is not difficult to find an original for that price. In any event, your knife is a good user, and the quality is just fine.

It is stamped with an 1194 Pattern number, if that means anything anymore, and I gave a whopping 19.95 for it with no shipping so I guess it will make a good edc.
I looked at some Schrade Heritage Knives today at an antique store, are they like this one? They were in the 60-70.00 dollar range.
I re read the insert in the tube, apparently this one was made in Camillus NY

That's pretty much what Phil was alluding to Tod. It was made on contract by Camillus, before they closed, for Taylor Brands. Some are now being made by Bear and Son. It is a fine using knife, with Delrin handles, and you got a good deal, I'd say. ::tu::

The Heritage Series knives were some of the nicest Schrade turned out, IMO. Mostly early '80s IIRC. Here is one of them, with smooth bone handles, threaded bolsters, coined rope shield, and nice swedging on the blades.....

Nice knife! I almost grabbed a Barlow Schrade Heritage, but I kind of got scared when I saw the same guy had a "US Classic" Barlow for 49.00! Now I am pretty sure those are made in China although the company is based in Kentucky. It was a nice looking knife and all, but I see them on ebay for like 8-10.00 with free shipping! Was there a US Classic that was made in the US like Schrade use to be made here and they have absconded with the brand name?

the man who "designed" the u.s classic line must live on a houseboat. salt river is just that, a river in ky. made in china. he affilliated himself with a "major" collector who jumped boat right after they were issued.

I was just looking at the tang stamp on the knife Testcase posted. Was the tang stamped with a half worn out die? I went looking on E-bay and found a Schrade Walden USA #293 trapper, item #180205220724. I noticed the letters touching each other on the tang stamp of Testcase's knife but, on the #293 trapper on E-bay they are not. Were there two different dies used to tang stamp these knives or is there a time difference in the two knives knives? Testcase, I'm not trying to offend you about your knife. If I have, I Apologize Sir. I'm just trying to learn more about knives and used yours for a lesson.
A dull knife is like an empty wallet, no need to carry it.

The eBay knife looks like the real deal (pre-1973) to me. Tod's knife is a modern, recently produced knife.
Here is a picture of a SW #293...from lrv's site.

I found one of my plastic tube 293's, didn't notice until I photographed it, that the knife is a Schrade, not Schrade Walden. But anyway, showing the box as well. Can help indentify new from old.

The tang stamp fonts appear different on the new Camillus knife from the one I hold in my hand. Yet another clue.

Justold, don't feel bad. In knife collecting, everyone is wrong sometime.

No offense taken! :D I too am on a learning curve! Heck, I bought the thing for the price of a Rough Rider! At worse I got an American made knife of decent quality for under 20.00 with my favorite handle material! How could I be upset?
And besides, in my other hobbies a 19.95 mistake would be a blessing, a cheap education in my book.

Oh, and I have a Heritage red bone bar;ow on the way after learning all of this!

I actually swam the Salt River as a kid! I know exactly where it is! It empties into the Ohio at West Point KY. A cicvil War Fort over looks it there, its near Ft Knox. I have always wondered about their address  Maybe they use the boat to cruise to CHina to pick up the knives... ::shrug:: It did look pretty nicely made though, along the lines of a better made Rough Rider or steel Warrior.
